The department of agriculture is
investigating whether some farmers
who obtained loans for seed Inst
* spring around Orangeburg and . St.
Matthews spent the money for automobiles,
hootch and other things not
contemplated by the government.
The investigator is a former governor
of Ohio, D. W. Davis.
The heaviest sentence in the Columbia
police court in ten years was
given Sam Wooten for pretending to
be u bootolgger and failing to deliver
booze after getting the money
for it. He got 30 days or $100 fine
on each of ten counts, the sentences

of 300 days or $1,000 fine. Wooten
told Columbia suckers that he had a
load of fiotlled in bond whisky,, had
run out of gas in the suburbs, and
would give the sucker a case of the
goods for mofiey to buy gas. There
were ten of them. The charge docketed
was obtaining money under
false pretenses.
