Mrs. Wright Was Hostess
In a lovely setting of" Easter lilies
and other cut flowers Mrs. W. L.
Wright was the charming hostess at
a buffet bridge dinner on last Thursday
evening, entertaining at her home
on Chesnut street. Tne delightful
affair was in compliment to the members
of the Thursday afternoon
bridge club and a few extra guests
who included Mrs. It. B. Pitts, Mrs.
Lambert DePass, Mrs. I). O. II ouser,
Mrs. H. G. Marvin, Mrs. W. L. Goodi
ale and Mrs. W. L. DePass. A delicious
course dinner was served at
7:30 and bridge followed. At each of
the five tables attractive boxes of
sport handkerchiefs were given the
highest score winners who were Mrs.

W. J. Mayfield..and Mrs. R. B. Pitts.

and his sister, Miss Carolyn Richardson,
of Wintbrop College, are spending
this week with their mother, Mrs,
Robert Marye'and Dr. and Mrs. John
W. Corbett.
Lieutenant and Mrs. Daniel Byrd
Miller, who are spending the winter
in Charleston, are visiting the former's
mother, Mrs. W. J. Mayfield on
Broad street.
Club Met With Mrs. Houser
Mrs. IJU, O. Houser was hostess at
her bridge1 club on Wednesday morning
of this week. Pretty Christmas
berries and holly were placed about
the rooms in which the games were
played.
Besides club' members other guests
included: . Mrs. H. G. Marvin, Mrs.
W. H. Harris, Mrs. B- O. Boykin,
Mrs.-John W. Corbett, Mrs. W. L.
Wright, Mrs. E. N. McDowell and
Miss Clara Krumbholz.
At the noon hour a delightful

To Hold Tilting Tournament
On New Year's Day at 2 o'clock at
the race track there will be a Tilting
Tournament. Three silver cups
will be presented to " the winning
knights and. gift* to each of their
ladies. In connection with the tournament
there will be a 100-yard dash
and prizes will be given for this
event.
This is being sponsored by the
Junior Welfare League, of Camden.
The admission for spectators will be
50 cents.
Knights desiring to take part are
asked to communicate with Mr. Kirby
Tupper, -Camden, who will be in
charge of the tournament.
There will also be a brush race,
quarter and half mile races on the
flat.. Entries for races shbuld be
sent to Mr. Samuel Russell, this city,
before December 28th.
Club Market on Saturday
On Saturday, December 12th, the
ladies of the Club Market are offering
deliciously cooked barbecue and
h&sh. Other things, such as preserves,
cakes, dressed chickens and
vegetables in season, will be offered
for sale also. Many will bring holly,
mistletoe, wreathes and red berries
for Christmas decorations so remember
you can purchase these at the
market.
Baby Show Held Here
The ladies of Circle number four
of Bethesda Presbyterian church
sponsored a most attractive baby
show on Wednesday afternoon, November
25th, at 3 o'clock, at Saint
Mary's Hall. A prize was given to
the prettiest and finest baby under
oVie year of age. Donald Morrison,
J#., won this prize. The finest
from one to two years was Hugh
Billups, Jr. The prettiest baby between
the ages of one and two
Betty Nettles, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Roland Nettles. Each baby was
presented with a prize. During the
afternoon ice cream, cake and candy
was sold.
When the Costa Rica schooner
went down in the Caribbean sea on
Monday of last week, her owners,
Hans J. J. Lau ami AdoTpTi "Schonek,
went dowft with her, scorning lifeboats,
rafts and other means of escape.
Eleven of the crew took to
boats and were rescued by the U. S.
mine-sweeper Swan and taken to
Colon, Canal Zone.
Mrs. Myers Honorcd
On Wednesday evening of last
week Mvs.. IJ. N. Myers was honor
guest at a delightful dinner party at
the Palmetto Tea Room, in colouration
of her birthday. The party was
given by Mr. Myers, to which eight
'guests were invited, lively red,,
chrysanthemums wore used as a center
piece ami tall red candles burned
at each end of Hhe table effectively
carrying out a color scheme of red
and white. A course dinner was
served at 7:30 before the game of
bridge. The honor guest was presented
with a lovely tea set of French
Chinadhom the friends present.

The Camden Garden Club held its
regular monthly meeting on Monday
at the home of Mrs. George K. Cook
on Green street. A large number of

highways, the club having undertaken
to care for the section of the road
to Columbia between the /dty gates
and the Wateree toll bridge. In time
it is hoped that this will be one of
the beauty spots of the Jefferson l>avis
highway. That will take time,
but a start is to be made at once.
The state highway commission is cooperating
in a most encouraging

During the summer the Garden
Club membership was opened to all
residents of Camden. This naturally
includes winter residents, who are
now cordially in.vited to join. Any
one wishing to accept this invitation
may get in touch with Miss Hetcher,
at Brevard Place, or may show their
desire to join by attending the next
meeting on January seventh at the
home of Mrs. T, J. Kirkland.
legion Auxiliary Notes
The December meeting of the Legion
Auxiliary was held last briday.
December 4th, at I^egion Hall. Despite
the inclement weather, twentyone
were present.
Tho president, Mrs. Sam Karesh,
presided in- her usual gracious- man-rter.
A report, was given by each
chairman of the different committed*.
Each gave a very interesting repent
which shows our unit is wide J wake.
The president announced a benotii
picture would be given this month
sponsored jointly by tho Legion and
Auxiliary. ,
The music chairman, Mrs. James
Gandy, had a quintet to sing Christmas,
carols and a paper on Woortrow

Miss Singleton Entertains ,
Miss Dolly Singleton entertained
her bridge club on Monday evening^
Tho ton score prize was won by Miss
Mary <5oodale. After the hostess
served tempting refreshments.
Mrs. Lola Pickett, widow, of Lex-1
ington, N. C., is in jail there on a
charge alleging the poisoning of-her
two children. One of tho children
died last spring and the other died
in September. Examination of the
stomachs of the two children disclosed
quantities of poisoning, which
resulted in the charges- being made
against the mother.
Any hope for a revision of the
Smoot-Hawley tariff bill, now blamed
for much of the economic troubles of
the United States, being revised, is
n6t likely to be realized at this session
of co&igress, as it is believed that
President Hoover would veto any substitute
for the present tariff l^wa

Married nt Parsonage
On last Saturday evening Miss Mildred
Beatrice Matthews, daughter of
Mrs. P. C. Mattrhows, of Pinewood,
became the bride of Mr. Wofford
Moore. The ceremony was performed
by Rev. W. (J. Ariail in the Methodist
parsonage at eight o'clock with
only close friends of the couple present.
The bride wore a lovely costume of
green with accessories to match. She
has been making her home in this
city for several years and has ..made
many friends who will be. glad to
learn that her marriage will not carry
her to some other city.
Mr. Moore came to Camden about
a year ago from Bishopville to be
with the Maekey Hardware company
and has made many friends here
since then.

Charities of Camden-Kershaw
County will be held at the Children's
Home, Fair street, Camden, S. ,C.,
the first Monday in January, 1932,

Boykin were the assistant hostesses.
The president called the meeting to
order, members repeating the Ix>rd's
Prayer. Secretary called the roll,
minutes were read. Treasurer gave
her report for"1 the year. The Chapter
was glad to note expenses paid
in full. The president reported $17.50 ?
paid on Stratford Memorial fund.
She also stated that the family of
Jas. W. Boone, of Westville, had re- ~
ceived a marker for grave at DeKalb.
The Chapter voted to remember its
Veterans at Christmas as heretofore.
During the social hour Miss Char- "
lotte Snlniond delighted the ladies,
with several "vocal solos, using old
songs, Mrs. James Gandy accompanying
her. After refreshments, the
' chapter adjourned to meet the first
Monday in January, 1032, with Mrs.
