Celebrates Fourth Birthday
Mrs. Mollis Cobb gave a lovely
children's party Tuesday afternoon
at her home on Ohesnut street and
the pretty affair ' celebrated the
fourth birthday of her .daughter,
Betty. Games were played in the
garden and in the peanut contest
shannon Lindsay won the first prize
and the second prize went to Betty
Rhame. Pink and white flowers and
refreshments in corresponding shades
were attractive details of the party.
The affair assembled some twenty
members of the youngest contingent.
Miss Chewning Entertains
Miss Frances Chewning entertained
with a swimming party at Twin
Lakes Friday evening in honor of her
attractive house guest, Miss Edith
Clybum, of Bethune. After a swim
a picnic supper was served.

On Wednesday afternoon Mrs. F.

the weekly bridge club at her home
on Broad street. Garden flowers
made the rooms where the tables
were arranged most attractive. Mrs.
Floyd Beaver won high score while
Miss Goldie Miller, of Sisterville, W.
Va., received ^ loV. Consolation was
cut by Mrs. Joel Hough. Those playing
besides members were Mrs. Clarence
Wilson,, of Philadelphia, Mrs.
Smyrl Halsall, Mrs. L. P. Tobin, Mrs.

Davis Awarded Scholarship

Mrs. C. E. Davis, of Kershaw, has
been awarded Jthe beneficiary scholarship
in pharmacy from the Fifth con.
gressional' district at the Medical college
of South Carolina at Charleston
by Governor Blackwood. Mr. Davis
is ft.worthy young man, diligent
and faithful in his effort to advance
himself in a most commendable way,
and Governor Blackwood has bestowed
the scholarship upon one wholly

When a mail plane pilot saw a
farmhouse three miles south of Gaffney
on fire, he circled the community
with his motors roaring and wakei
everybody at 2:30 o'clock in the morning,
one night this week, but the fire
could not be extinguished, although

In 1864, some people in Marlboro
county at Beimettsville, Factory,
Irene, and Marlboro, made a friendship
quilt for a Methodist preacher,
named Thomas, and wrote their name
on a block apiece. It was stolen from
its reverend owner in a Civil war
fight in Arkansas by Union soldiers
who sold it later to a native Arkansas
woman who bequeathed it to her
son, now an old man in Waco, Texas.

Three hundred unemployed men
and women marched on the stores of *
Hneryetta, Okla., Saturday and demanded
food supplies for an emergency
relief store they had established
in city hall. .Several stores
quickly contributed food supplies to
the relief store. Governor Murray
said that the. jobless at Henryetta
would be given "immediate relief"
by the state, but that they would
be required to work for it.
