The Rev. Dr. Zeno Wall, pastor of
the First Baptist church at Shelby,
I N. <\, celebrated the 25th anniversary
of his entering the ministry by
preaching in Mi. Pleasant Baptist
church where he preached his first
sermon in 1906. He has preached
over 3,000 sermons and held 126 revivals,
has had over 6,000 conversions
and ordained 52 preachers, while he
travelled over 3,000,000 miles in his
work.
The general assemblies of the Presbyterian
church, both north and
south, this week took a stand against
birth control and especially the circulation
of literature about it.

months ending March 31, it was announced
this week, and this is about
56 per cent of the entire tobacco
taxes paid in. this country.
During the last nine months North
Carolina made one and a third billion
more cigarettes than in the same
period a year ago, and Richmond, Va.,
made over four billion more.
Dr. George Kdward Dee ley, a bachelor,

it was a murder for revenge and

Duke university has received a
rare treasure for its library, a fine
manuscript of the entire Greek testament
in the twelfth ceptury and

manuscripts exist today, and this is
the first complete testament to be
brought to America. It is on vellum.
Judge M. V. Barnhill was leaving
the court house at Asheville after
sentencing Wallace B. Dnyis, bank
president, when he heard Frank A.
Patti who said he is a retired banker
from New York on vacation tell a
man that courts officers are a bunch
of crooks, and that the court might
as well have turned Davis loose.
Judge Barnhill hurried back to the
bench, had Patti brought before him,
and sentenced him to ten days in
jail for contempt of court.
Mortimer L. Schiff, noted banker
and philanthropist, of New York, and
president of the Boy Scouts of Amer
ica, died suddenly yesterday morning
at Oyster Bay, aged 54 yearn, from
heart disease. He wan a fpuntmrr in
Kuhn, Ixxrb and Ct>? for over thirty
years. Hia wife went to Kurppe two
weeks ago, and he ia survived also by
a won aged 20 years and a daughter,
Mrs. Richard B. W. Halt of New
York. His gifts to philanthropies

Only a few hundred feet above the
brink of the American /alls at Niagara,
Kdward He Ruscio plunged into
the swift water and succeeded in rescuing
a woman who was trying to
commit suicide. The superintendent
of the state park there says it was
the most courageous and thrilling
thing he ever saw and I>e Ruscio
should have a (Carnegie medal for
bravery. The young man is 20 years
old and with his brother, who helped
him get the woman out, livee in
j Chicago Heights, 111. The youths
were sitting in an automobile when
the woman jumped into the rapids,

Bishop James Cannon, Jr., filed a
suit for a half million dollars against
Congressman Tinkhara, of Massachusetts,
for damages for libel by charging
the bishop ocf violation of the
corrupt practices act. What Tinkham
said on the floor of the house
is not actionable, but he repeated part
of it irv a public statement later.
<Col. House has been caught at taking
an active and efficient, and carefully
quiet part in the movement to
nominate Governor Roosevelt, of New
York, for president. It is the first
time he has been active since 1916.
He says it is because of his admiration
for Roosevelt and bis belief in
a Democratic victory next year. ,
In Anderson county, the tombstone
of a very highly* regarded lady
of former years developed cracks in
the marble, which on being observed
from a certain angle by imaginative
persons were said to compose the
head of the devil. iSuch large crowds
visited the country graveyard on Sundays,
that it was closed and the
tombstone painted over.

Suitable breeding grounds for migratory
waterfowl are few and far
between in this country; but the Biological
Survey, of the United States
Department of Agriculture has learned
from its bird-banding activities
that a single breeding ground or con- ;
centration area of birds often serves
a wide territory. For example, red- '
head and pintail ducks banded on
the Bear River marshes at Great (
Salt Lake, Utah, have been recovered
in fourteen states and in Mexico.
Black ducks and bluewinged teals
banded at a feeding ground in Southern
Ontario have been recovered in j
