Thomas D., Campbell, owner of a
i#5,000-acre farm at Hardin, Mont.,
said Friday that as a temporary solution
of the wheat problem, not one
grain Of wheat had been planted on
his farm this -spring. He suggested
farmers should raise flux instead of
wheat, pointing out that while more
wheat is produced in this country
than can be consumed, there is not
enough flag to meet requirements.
Married Teachers Barred
York, May 25.??Dan Cupid has
been hit a hard blow by the York
board of school trustees. All women
teachers of the city schools have
been notified that their marriage will
automatically bring about their dis^
charge. ' The board's action will not
affect the status of the several mnr'
ried women already teaching in the
York schools.
Hauling Food.
At this season of the year the
Coastal Highway is lined wi\h big
trucks speeding northward with
beans, peas, potatoes, strawberries,
and other farm commodities. It is
said that many of these trucks deliver
their cargoes at the back doors
of hotels, restaurants and other eating
places in Richmond, Philadelphia,
New York and other northern cities.
So heavy is the traffic in truck and
berries that travel on the highway
after dark is difficult. Some of the
trucks come down from the north,
pay cash for the produce _at the fields
and retail it in the northern cities.

The Pennsylvania railroad on Wednesday
began laying 1*62-pound steel
rail on its lines near Tyrone, Pa. This
is the heaviest weight rails ever laid
by a railroad. t

A joint resolution has been introduced

general assembly would be held in

provisions for special sessions at the

The Florida house of representee

55 to 38 approved a bill to legalize

Twenty-five persons were overcome

of an orphanage at Guadalajara,
Mexico., were victims this week
of poisoning, believed to have originated
in condensed milk.
Two of the new city officials of
Asheville, N. C., inducted into office
this week are blind. Sam. M. Cathey,
new police court judge, and Wickes
Wamboldt, city councilman, are both
blind. f.
The Chase National bank of New
York, the world's largest banking institution,
announced this week that
beginning June 1st it would reduce
the interest paid on savings accounts
to 2 per cent annually from the present
rate of 3 per cent.
There are about IKK) Confederate
veterans left on the pension rolls of
South Carolina. This year veterans
will get $240 each, widows over 55
years old $100 each and widows under
55 years of age $125.
Plan To Remodel

old "Sandy" Bowers' mansion, once
a show-place of the west, to make it
the "Agua Caliente of Nevada."
The property on whieh the suddenly
wealthy Lemuel S. Bower* expended
approximately 1400,000 back
in 1861, has been operated by Henry
Hitter as a bathing and pleasure resort
since 1003.
Tentative plans of the prospective
new owners call for the construction
of a modern hotel; a fashionable casino
and Bummer homes and subdivision
of the surrouriding country.
The old mansion, designed by an
European architect, once boasted
gold door knobs, silver hinges and
imported marble fireplaces.
Bowers, described in Nevada histories
as an "easy-going frontiersman,"
took a fortune from the Oomstock
Ix>dge in 1850 and 1860. He
and his wife spent recklessly. The
mansion built in the wilderness of
the Washoe valley, 18 miles south of
Reno, took a large part of the fortune.
When Bowers died in 1868 his mon-^
ey had been wasted away. Mr-*.
Bowers disposed of the mansion before
her death in 1903 and it has
since changed hands several times.
At one time it was sold for taxes.
The wide open gambling law recently
enacted in Nevada opened the
way for the proposed development.
Five former officials of the National
Bank of New Bern, N. C., were on
Tuesday indicted by a Federal grand
ury on charges of misapplying funds
of the bank in making loans to insolvent
corporations in which they
were interested.
Henry Stewart, 66, was released
from a Massachusetts prison last
week after having served 34 years
for killing a fellow worker. He was
most interested in the large number
of automobiles, the Boston subway,
elevated cars, airplanes and newbuildings.

The supreme court affirmed a
judgment of $2,000 against Oc-onee
county which it must pay because a
mob lynched a negro there.
Sale of the Hogback Mountain
property, embracing 16,000 acres of
mountain fastneess, the greater part
of which is in Greenville county, to
the Carolina Mountains Holding corporation
was made known at Tryon,
N. C., Friday.- The holding corporation
was formed by Emmet, Emmet
and Tull, of New York City, and Lee
Tobin, of Washington, D. C.

Naming Your Farm
Would Add Dignity
Every farm, church and achool in
the county should be named. The attractiveneee
of rural homesteads,
churches and schooLs could be increased
considerably 'if on appropriate
sign was displayed nesr the
highway which signified the name of
the farm or the church or the school.
Abo it would be well to designate
on the sign any specialties engaged
in such as "Long View Farm, Poultry
& Eggs."

owners, tiew interest for the church
and distributes advertisement for the
schools. The best, signs arc made
with boards painted -white with black
letters. They may he of the square
shape and erected by the gate or
another entrance leading from the
highway or they may be hung over
the gate of entrance.
All un-painted farm residences
should be either painted or whitewashed
and if white-wash is used
the government formula is recommended.
This formula may be obtained
from the County Agent's office.
The attractiveness of many
homes may be added to by using the
following suggestions:
"Clean back yards, front yards, vacant
lots, porches, garages, stockyards,
roads, outbuildings.. ?
"Plant trees, ^rubbery, grass plots,
vegetable garden, flower garden,flower
boxes. .
"Paint house, fences, outbuildings,
screens, porches.
"Miscellaneous rubbish piles burned,
insect breeding places destroyed,
fences repaired, porches and steps repaired,
roof repaired, screens repaired,
junk and papers properly disposed
of. refuse cans provided, old signs
removed, shrubbery and trees trimi
med."
L These suggestions were widely circulated
in the county in the form of
entry blanks for the contest, and
many who did not actually enroll in
the competition were stimulated to
adopt one or more of the "clean-up'
hints as a matter of pride and community
consciousness, says Henry 1>.
