Lured Bey To Death

Corner, May 96.?The body
of Solomon Byrd, 20-year-old Berkeley
county youth Who had been missing
since May 2, has been found on
Horse bland, deep in Hell Hole
swamp, and his step-ftaher, Lewis
Cowaft, alias Charlee Wilson, is
charged with his murder. tCowart,
according to Sheriff C. F. Ballentine,
has confessed that he shot the youth
after a quarrel 'which involved the
young man's step-mother.
Byrd's body was located on the island
by u friend, young Drake Jackeon,
who had been aiding in thd
search eince Byrd was firet reported
missing. Identification was made by
the youth's clothing. Dea^h had been
caused by a charge of shot which had
entered the baick of the skull, tear-'
ing a hole about the size of a dollar.
When the step-father was placed |
S the Berkeley county jail here yesrday,
according to (Sheriff Balientine,
he confessed the slaying, saying
that he hud lured the youth to the
secluded spot on an invitation to go.

Murderer Begins
Life Service
Sumter, May 2#.?Frank K. Jennings,
Sumter county former, convicted
by a jury in circuit court here last
Jurw of conspiring with Caesar D.
Cockerel! "to kill E*ra Hodge, middleaged
former, and sentenced to life
imprisonment, was removed from the
Sumter (county jail this afternoon and
carried to begin serving his sentence
in the state penitentiary.
Jennings' appeal for a new trial
was denied recently by the state supreme
court. Papers ordering his
imprisonment were received from the
supreme court this morning by Solicitor
F. A, McLeod.
Cockerell, who testified in Jennings'
trial that he 'was hired by the
latter *to kill Hodge, who -was said
to have informed officers of the location
of a whisky still operated by
Jennings and Cockerell, is still in
the county jail! He will be placed on
trial at the next term of general sessions
court. ..
Hodge was shot down in front of
his home at night by Cockerell, who
confessed the killing and implicated
Jennings a few days after the murder
was committed.

Ten-Cent Store
Sued By Girls

iSuit was entered Saturday in the
court of common plea* for Richland
county by guardians for Margaret
Hay Boykin and Ann Johnson Clarkson,
both minors nbeve the age of
14 years, for damage* of $10,000 each
against the MoCrory Stores Corpor-)
ation and Evelyn- Brannon, as the
result of alleged charges made against
the two girls that they had
taken rings from ? counter of the
five-and-ten-cent store,
The complaints In both actions
were filed Saturday morning with
Clerk of Court Clarence E. Hinnant,
by James H. Fowles and F. Khrlich
Thomson, attorneys for the plaintiffs.
The complaints declare that the
girls entered the store for the pur.pose
of making purchases on Saturday,
March 28, and that they stopped
at a counter to examine rings
displayed there. When they moved
to another counter the defendant,
Evelyn Brannon, employed at the
store as a floor walker, declared they
had Liken a ring, the complaint alleges.
Although thgy -'denied the charge,
Evelyn Brannon /declared that the
cleric at the counter made the statement
that they had taken the rings
and insisted on searching them, the
complaints set fopth. The girls were
searched but no were^ound on
their persons, although the" defendant,
Brannon, "meant to charge and
! did charge and was understood by
the hearers and observes to change
plaintiff . . . with violation of the
criminal laws of South Carolina, the
girls allege.

the guardian ad litem of Mary Hay
Boykin and Alex G. Clarkson as the
guardian ad litem of Ann Johnson

National Guardsmen fired/on a ltiob
that attacked the jail at Elberton,
Ga., Monday night in an effort to
get hold of negroes arrested on suspicion
of having attacked a "white
woman. -Six negroes were spirited
away /from Elberton to Atlanta by
the sheriff after disguising them as
soldiers. Two members of the mob
were wounded by the firing of the
guard.
Wednesday was the fourth anniversary
