B* It ordained by the Mayor and
Council men of the City of C/amden, in
Council assembled and by the authority
of the same.
Section 1. Kvery person, firm,
company or corporation, engaged on
May 1, 11/31, in any calling, business,
profession or occupation in whole or,
in part within the city of Camden,!
an may be hereinafter specified, shall
obtain during the month of May, !

hereinafter prescribed. Kvery person,
firfn, company or corporation !
commencing business in said city on
or before the first day of May, 1931,
shall in like manner obtain a license
therefor before entering upon such
calling, business ,profession or occupation
as hereinafter specified.
Section , 2. Kvery (person, firm,
company or corporation engaged in
or intending to engage in any culling,
business, profession or occupation for
which a license is required, shall apply
to the Clerk and Treasurer of
the City of Camden fdt the same?
by whom all such licenses shall be issued,
and shull at the time of applying,
make and sign a written statement
under oath, and file it'with the
said Clerk and Treasurer, setting!
forth: First/ his or her or its name i
or style, the name of the persons con- j
stituting such firm or company. I
Second, the calling, business, {profession
or occupation for which license
is required. Third, the place
where such calling, business, profes
sion^ or occupation is to he carried
on; the amount of capital invested,
or the gross annual income. Parties
in business on the first of May, shall
make such application for neW license
and file such written statement before
May 21st.
Section 3.?A penalty of fifteen
per cent shall be added to all licenses
which are not paid during the month
of May, 1981, except such as may
become due after that time. Provided,
however, that immediate payment
may be required in each and
every case at the discretion of the
said Clerk and Treasurer, and the
foregoing provision shall in no wise
stay or hinder action to enforce immediate
payment; which tax and penalty
shall be recovered in the manner
hereinafter prescribed, and if any
person, firm, company or corporation
required so to do by the terms of
this ordinance shall refuse or neglect
to make out and deliver to the Clerk
and Treasurer of the City of Camden,
- on or before the time herein required,
the statement provided for by Section
2 of this ordinance, or shall make a
false statement, or shall refuse to
take and subscribe an oath or affirmation
as to the truth of such
statement, or any part thereof; or
from any cause shall fail to take out
v such license as may be required, by
this ordinance, the said Clerk and
Treasurer shall report the case to
the Mayor, who shall proceed to ascertain
as nearly as possible, the business
of such perfeon firm, company,
or corporation, for which he, she or
it may be liable to a license tax
therefor, and in case of default for
the purpose of such investigation,
the said Clerk and Treasurer shall
notify, the person, firms, companies
ur corporation in default to appear
before the Mayor at his office?at a
time stated in said notice; and also
such witnesses as the Mayor may
desire to examine. The witnesses
called as aforesaid shall be examined
by the Mayor, under oath or affirmation,
touching the nature of the business,
of such party, and everything
which may evince the amount of li

From the information thus acquired
the Mayor chntl find and assess
the amount of license tax due by
such party whether he, she or it attended
the investigation or not, anil
shall add thereto a, penalty of fifteen
per cent, thereof, and should such license
tax and penalty be not paid
within five days thereafter, the said
Clerk and Treasurer shall issue an

City of Camden, or the Sheriff of
Kershaw County, in St;ite and
the satd Chief of Police W Sheriff
shall proceed to collect the ?aid 'icenhe
tax and penalty, by levy and
*al? of real or pernonal property, an
now provided by law for the collection
of taxea, together with an additional
five per cent, of the whole
amount, which shall be the Sheriff'#
or 'Chief of Police'# compensation for
making wuch collection, in addition
to one dollar for making such levy,
which shall be paid 'by delinquent
without entry or mileage fee#; provided,
however, that any person' or
corporation shall have the right of
appeal to the City Council of Camden
(notice of such appeal having been
given to the Clerk and Treasurer
within five days from the time of
which such assessment of license and
penalty shall have been made) and
upon hearing such appeal, the. said
Council ?hail make such order therein
as it shall deem just and proper; and
provided further, thai in lieu of the
remedy above set forth to enforce
pnyrpent an action or actions may be
brought in any court of competent
jurisdiction for the recovery of such
license tax and penalties, ^nd provided
further, that any 'person, firm,
company or corporation who shall
carrv on. or attempt to carry on any
calling, business, profession or occupation
without a license as herein
required, or who shall neglect or refuse
to give the information required
or to answer such questions as may
be required or who shall fail to attend
before the Mayor to be examined
by him when so required, as 'provided
in Section 2 and 3 of this ordinance
may be deemed guilty of a violation
thereof before the Municipal
Court and may be fined not more
than One Hundred Dollars, or be imprisoned
not exceeding thirty days.
Section 4. All license granted under
this ordinance shall be posted in
a conspicuous place, except In case of
vehicles for hire, which vehicles shall
have placed upon them metal badges
with the number of badges and the
license year marked thereon, such |
badges to be furnished by the Clerk
and Treasurer upon payment of the
license tax. Failure to display such
badges .will subject the persons owning
or using the same to a penalty
of not more than Five Dollars or imprisonment
not exceeding ten days.
The license granted under this ordinance
shall at ail times be subject
to inspection by any officers of
the City of Camden and no calling,
business, profession or occupation
shall be carried on elsewhere than the
place named, in this license therefor,
unless authority be granted by the
Clerk and Treasurer, which authority
shall be endorsed on the license.
Section 6.?All licenses granted un~
der this ordinance shall continue in j
force until the first day of May A. D.
1932, except such as are written for
a shorter period, as may hereinafter!
be provided.
The City Council reserves the, right
to revoke any license^ for any cause .
which to* them may seem to be just.
Section 6. The following sum or
sums of money are required to be
paid to the said Clerk and Treasurer
for a license to carry on the business,
calling, profession or occupation in
whole or in part within the limits of
the City of Camden, as in each case
specifically appears.

Where the gross annual, income
from the business, ^callings or professions

Dollars or less, the license shall be

drivers upon report to the) City Council
are found not to be proper persons
to run said automobiles or
trucks, license to the owners of same
shall be revoked unless said drivers
are immediately taken off said, automobiles
or trucks.
All persons owning or controlling
hacks or other vehicles moving on
wheels and plying for hire in the
City of Camden snail post in a conspicuous
place in said hack or vehicle
a printed schedule of prices, to be
furnished by the City Clerk upon the
issuance of license, and keep the same
so ?oated during the continuance of
said license; and shall have a tag,
furnished by the City Clerk, carrying
a number corresponding with the
number of said hack or vehicle,
fastened on the outside of said hack
or vehicle in such a position as to be
easily seen; and all drivers of such
hacks or vehicles ehall wear a metal
badge, of convenient sire, on the left
aide of jbis outer garment, x/ith the
number of his license painted or engraved
thereon.
