WALKING CURIOSITY gHQP
.A little boy c*me ipto my office
yesterday to see if I would give
bim h lo^d- pencil. I gave 2 little
fellows a pencil apiece about 3 weeks
$g0 and I am sure 7b other little
fellows have called for their pencils,
I gave them out as long as they
lasted.
... .After my latest visitor had
thanked me for his pencil and had
it sharpened on a pencil sharpener,
I noticed that his podkets seemed
powerful full of something, so I began
to investigate. Jimmy was not
averse to acquainting me with his
miscellaneous possessions, so I had
him to empty each pocket separately
ami put the contents thereof in separate
piles on my desk, and here's
what he was toting around:

2 grasshopper legs,
y marbles.
1 mule-shoe ends.
7 wire nails.
1 golf ball,

BABY BATTLERS
....I spw in the papers the other
day where a college turned out and
took all of its girl-students to the
state capital for the purpose of viewing
a legislature in action. Some
of tbem had never seen a circus, others
had, und still others were along
that enjoyed fun of any kind, so a
good time was' had by all.
.'...I undertook to run my business
once on the "legislature plpnV and
it was a fine business as long as
it ran. I bought all of the goods
I could get, I hired additional clerks;
raised the salaries of all concerned;
put in new fixtures, and after I got
my buildings plumb chock full of
stuff, I went out fco raise the money
to meet my bijjs with, and as I!
coulddent do it, I busted.
COTTON LETTER
....New York was weak, Liverpool
was strong: Bombay straddled and
hobbled along. The shorts were
hedging, and the bulls were buying:
the republicans were cussing and
democrats were crying. It rained in
Texas and thundered irv, Maine; the
boll weevils were giving?Old Georgia
a pain. Some mills had stopped
and others went broke; the 2 by 4's
had their Fords in soak. The Federal
Reserve said margins were close:
And many of the - speculators had
taken a big dose. If you've got money,
you'd better not sell: But it looks
like the Farm Board has played?
thunder.
... .The, new evening dresses (worn
Jjy .ladies at night at parties and
other places where folks eat Sen-sen)
are not at all bad. In the first place,
the said dresses are just about as
thin as they are long, that is refreshing.
The backs are cut so low
in some cases that it makes sightseeing
really dangerous. I am favor
of letting the women wear just as
little as they please. I can get along
without them having on any
more clothes than they think mor-'
ally necessary.
THE BONE-US CHECK
Uncle Joe's Sanvmie got his
bonus a few days ago. Uncle Joe
told me before it came that he knew
Sp.nrmie would spend it intelligently,
as he had raised hrm to respect a
dollar and wateh his dimes.
. . Sarrtinie sedm's to have parted
. .. .Sammie seems to have parted
with his $480.00 in just exactly 1
week. ~ JHe sent Mr. Fdrtt' $237.60 and
a note for $lil?.<50 for a rattle-trap.
He paid 75 cents on his delbts, thus
reducing his sum-total in the matter
of liabilities to $567.89,
....Uncle Joe borrowed $11.00 from
Sammie, and Sammie says that is
all that he actually lost from his
prematurely collected insurance policy.
He dropped 2 cents in the collection
plate that (Sunday, and the
drug store fed him anc\ ?Jujlie Haskins
a Tew -urnes (on banana frappees)
for $K5.26. ' . *
f. .<? .iSamrmie had a' job in a grocery
store at $1(5 a week but he diddn't
turn up for 5 days after his government
check came, and when he fin*
^ally turned up, a boy who did not
fight the Germans had already land*
ed his place. But Sammie did not
seam to care, as he. still had $35.00.
v.. .Everybody likes picture shows
amLjJudie, so the
Colonial got $5j60 the first week that
he became inch. Mr. Rockefeller apparently
had an interest in that bonus:
Sammie sent *him $16.80 in exactly
6 days, but he saved $9.00 and
bought candy for Judie on Friday
and Saturday and Sunday. ~ .
iSiimmie should have married long
*go, but he has put it off w, now
for 2 good reasons, as follows: girls
don't like hair-lip boys who have no
money; that is?pretty girls don't,
and the other reason was and is:
Sammie didn't like the girls that were
willing to like him, therefore he grew
a mushtash.

... .tSammie's mushtash is the talk of
the town. It U a cross (in color)
betwixt an amber and a pink-red, and
it looks very much like a neck-mole
that is trying to sprout something.
It sits kinder to the left of his right
nostril. But his money had all departed
this life for point* unknow n
at the beginning of the eighth day,
and he will of necessity remain broke
until another war is fought or a
bonus paid. (N. B. This is practically
a true.story of a'young fellow

Twenty Thousand
See Forestry Movies
According to the monthly report
just issued by the American Forestry
Association, 20,K40 men, women ami
children have seen the moving pictures
on Forest Conservation in South
Carolina during the month of March.
Of this nunrfber 7,000 were colored.
In addition over V1,000 pieces of literature
and posters were distributed.
These movies are a part of the
American Forestry * Association Southern
Educational Project carried on
in coo|>eration with the South Carolina
Forest Service and the National
Forest Service, which plans on reaching
every school house in South Carolina
in the forested region.
Mr. John Hopkins, unit director for
this project, reports increasing interest
in Forest protection and splendid
cooperation on the part of individuals,
Service clubs and other organizations
in the, territory reached
by the pictures. The total number
having seen the pictures and heard
the talk's on Forestry for the year is
in excess of 1T6.000 in South Carolina.

This is one "of those stories, that
fishermen tell?"but lt*S not* about
fish. Tom Lloyd, young Vance
county, North Carolina, farmer, was
walking along the highway with his
gun in hand. He saw an eagle and
winged it in flight. The bird fell
tp the ground. When Lloyd approached
it caught the gun barrel
in its beak. Lloydr could not break
the hold so he led the eagle to his
home a (mile and a half away. The
bird is now in a chicken cb'bp on the
Lloyd farm. It is an American eagle
with a wing spread of six feet.

Emory H. Richcreek became mayor
of Hoope?to<wn, 111., on Tuesday and
will serve two years for a salary of
50 cents per year. The aldermen of
the town, eight of thean^ will draw
25 cents each per year.
Fifty (Clark county, Kansas, farmers,
who normally grow 1,500,000
bushels, of wheat, adopted a resolution
not to sow any wheat this year
unless it is $1 a bushel by seeding
time.
Four men (were killed and two
wounded in a Clash of deputy sheriffs
and nine guards with about 40 striking
coal miners near Evarts, Kyt,Tuesday.
Save Some Seed
In the early days of this country,
everybody saved both their garden
and field seeds, Tlsat was before
the growing of fine seeds had become
a specialty.
Of course, it is economical for the
fa tuner to buy some of his seed from
the specialists today. In fact, there
are certain kinds of seeds which can
not be produced on each and every
fa tin. But there are uny number of
kinds which can be grown must successfully
on the Darin.
Here is an editorial on this subject
which your county agent has lifted
out of the Southern Agriculturist for
the readers of this column:
The corn can be saved from the
standing stalks in isolated parts of
the field and if it was a good variety
to start with, likely better seed can
be saved at home than can be bought.
If a pure strain of cotton is grown,
some of the laist of the crop can bo
run through the gin after it has been
cleaned by running another portion
of the same kind of cotton through
it. Thus the cotton for planting, and
maybe some for sale, can he saved.
Tobacco *\$eed can be saved from
healthy plants of^orrect type whose
flowers are protected from cross p<dination
with paper sack's. Some of
the sorghum can Ik* allowed to mature
and the wed can l>e threshed in
a machine or curried out with currycomb
when the quantity needed >s
small. Sweet potatoes rati l>e saved
from strictly healthy plants grown on |
fresh land and they can t>e kept in
disinfected boxes in pot'tion of house
separate from the main crop, t'rimson
clover can la* saved in the chaff |
for home use without the use of any-)
thing but mower, rake and a fork.
Soy beans qan be cut by hand and
beat out in a wagon box, Sweet
clover seed can Ik* saved in the same
way.
Garden seed can be saved in like
manner. A portion of the 'beat of
the vegetables can be set aside for
seed production. Nickels, dimes,
dollars and much larger amounts can
Ik' saved in this way.
