Columbia? Feb. 22.-?One man in
dead, another i? in jail charged with
murder, and a woman is Injing held
as a material 'witness (following *
shooting today at a home near the
business section of Columbia.
According to evidence so far gathered
by officers, Tillman Dunaway,
brother of the chief of rural police
of Richland county, walked into the
front bedroom of the home and without
provocation fired one shot into
the breast of Donnie J). Gardiner, 38.
Gardiner died three -hours later in
a local hospital.
Mrs. Mildred K. Jtoberson, said to
be the wife of a railroad man, was
the only eye-witness to the actual
shooting. She said that Gardiner
was on the 'bed when Dunaway entered
and fired the shot.
Two of the negro helpers at Gardiner's
place also were arrested today
for questioning, but were released
soon afterward. One of the
negroes, who started working there
only Saturday, ^yiid his job was to
"answer the telephone and take
down numbers."
The fatal shot was fired from a
pistol said to have been taken a
short time before from the home of
Grady Staines, nearby. Starnes said

and police.

butter-fat during January. Of these,

Guernseys not only predominated in
the total places won, byt also took
nine of the firsft 10 honors.

honor with 70.4 pounds of butterfat
and 1,314.4 pounds of milk. Second
honor went to Prim-ess Babe, of

being 07.5 pounds of butterfat.

income of 30 cents per bird or,

highest egg production in the. oJaas of

R. H. Middle ton, Olarks Hill, topped
the calendar record keepers with 780

The summary also showed that 33

10 eggs per bird; 20 other flocks oi
Rhode Island Reds averaged 9.7 egg?;
10 flocks of Barred Rocks averaged
9.3 eggs; and 27 flocks made up of
two or more different breeds averaged
9.3 eggs per bird.
The Tennessee supreme court on
Saturday ruled that the voting of
additional compensation in the shape
of ""bonuses" .by members of the state
general assembly was unconstitutional.
The legislature held a twelveday
extra session in 1929 and voted
themselves the extra pay.
