More than 1,000 persons have frozen to death on the streets. In northern sections of the country. especially along the Siberian and Manchurian border, the cold has been even more severe. Although the snow is not unusually heavy for this part of the world, the intense cold has caused trains on most lines to run two and three days behind time. Several' major accidents have been re-ported along the Chinese Has tern railway and in one case a train left the tracks when the locomotive wheels froze and., cracked. Several instances have been n^_ ported where men and woimen leaving cabarets in intoxicated conditions have fallen in the streets and frozen to death in a short time. Miss Dorothy Sawyer, 24. of Louis, 111* i* apparently recovering from an illness which had held he; in a state of comii, unable to speak or move, since last August. President Hoover Wednesday gave ten per cent of his annual salary to the Red Cross for the drought sufferers. The contribution .was $7,500. His salary as president is $75,000.
