May Enter Contest

Extern ion Service of Cleinwon College
announces the inauguration of an
Iri*h I'otato Cajiylest beginning with
tl?e 11131 crop, the content having
been made possible through the cooperation
of fertilizer manufacturers,
banks, agricultural uocietiea, barrel
manufacturers, shipping associations,
seedsmen and other parties directly
interested in this crop and in the
advancement of agricultural work in
?x>uth Carolina, 'Which have contributed
a fund of >650.00 to be used
as prizes in this content.
The present plans are for a first
prize? of $200.00, a second prize of
$150.00, a third of $100.00, a fourth
of $75.Op, a fifth of $50.00, sixth
of $25.00, and five other prizes of
$10.00 each. The contest is to be
state-wide and any grower planting
as much as one acre of Irish potatoes
is eligible to enter provided he
is willing to keep a complete record
on his crop in a record book furnished
him by the Extension Service and
turn this record over to the Extension
Seruvee upon the completion of
the contest, says L. P. Watson, ex'*)

Former Governor
Commits Suicide
Jersey City, N. J., Jan. 26. ?Kdward
I. Kdwards, who rose from a
two-dollar-a-week bank runner to exalted
posts of government a?d finance,
and who lost both, together
with his health in recent years, committed
suicide last night by shooting
in the bedroom of hia apartment.
He *waa 68 years old.
A note, in a sealed envelope, addressed
to his daughter and a slip
of paper within to Wis son, said
"goodbye?-dad," and directed attention
to his insurance policies and
private papers.
The body of the former New Jersey
governor and United States senator
was found today by . Charles
Baumgarten, friend and legal advisor,
whose fear for Mr. Kdwards was
aroused when he failed to keep an
appointment. He knew that Kdwards
had removed a revolver from a drawer
at his office.
In the locker! bedroom, where th*^
body was found, it was found also
that Krlwards, intent upon death was
mindful of the weH-being of a pet.
He had filled to overflowing a water
trough and food cup for his parrot.
Three groups of Chicago swindlers
have been successful in swindling
their victims out of $250,000 in the
past six months. Rome of their victims
have been holders of high public
office. *
The missing persons bureau of the
New York police department, reports
that during 10.30. 25,000 persons, including
2,450 girls and 3,500 hoys
have been reported us missing from
that city.
Cordell Smith. lb, of Bessemer
City. N. C., was shot Sunday night
as he was trying to enter a filling

The grand jury of Buncombe county
is making an investigation into
the affairs of the closed Central
Bank and Trust company of Asheville,

dollars of public funds when it

Misunderstanding a telephone conversation
a Joliet, 111., physician gave
a girl patient a transfusion of "parrot's
blood" instead of "parent's
blood," as advised over the telephone
by a Chicago infantile paralysis ,
specialist. The child has suffered no <
ill-effects from the misunderstanding.
James Robinson Dead
James Robinson, ag"ed 63 years,
d^ed at his home in the Buffolo' section
Wednesday, January 21, and was >
buried in the eemeetry at Buffalo
Baptist church on Friday. The funeral
services were conducted by Rev.
S. F. Robinson. Mr. Robinson is survived
by his widow and one son,
Ernest Robinson, of New York. Five
full brothers and five half-brothers,
one full sister and one half-sister
also survive him. Mr. Robinson was
a faithful member of Buffalo church.
