Five negroes who recently murdered
B. Wilbur HendHx, a merchant of
I vexing ton, in his home after robbing
the family, were sentenced Tuesday
to- be electrocuted on February 27,
after confessing -the crime. They
were arrested last week, and tried
Tuesday. They wanted to plead
guilty, but the law eompolled a trial.
The jury waa out ten minutes. The
court room was filled with soldiers
of the national guard on duty by order
of the governor. No notice of
appeal was given. The negroes are:
John A kwright, Ernest Thomas,
James IliekiMfiti, Robert FHdridgc and
I George Bird. Two 'Advil,* men had
i been arrested for the murder of
j llendrix before detectives got on the
'trail of the gang of negroei.
Harvey S. Firestone, tire manufacturer,
going South in company with
Thomas A. Edison, is quoted as saying
in Richmond, Va., when discussing
hard times: "We need something
like this to show t^s how lucky
are. I believe the depression htpr
served to dumonstrate to the American
ppople That they can only be
really yhanpy when helping others."

Well-Knowii Citizen Passes Suddenly

Jjouis A. Haynes, aged 63, a wellknown
citizen, died at his home, 815
Lyttleton street, 'Monday morning.
His (loath came suddenly. Mr.
Haym;* had previously followed the
(> trade as a 'machinist, but a number
of yearn ago he lost an arm in en
explosion, which had greatly incapacitated
him. We was an industrious
man and worked whenever he^poula. ,
He at one time ran an ice house on
Market street. \ .
Mr. Haynea is survived by his
widow and the following children:
Eddie Haynea, Frank B. Haynea, J.
T. Haynes, WilHe J. Haynes, 'Woodrow
Hay lies, Mrs. Carrie Stokes,''Mrs.
Elizabeth Cordon and 'Mrs. Sadie Ott.
The funeral occurred from the
Camden Baptist chur<tfi on Wednesday
afternoon at 3 oVlock, services
being conducted by Kev. J. B. Caston,
assisted by Jtev. Warren G. -Arhtil,
of the Methodist church. .The active
