Columbia, -> (' ' Jan. 12.?At least
50 officers, the entire personnel of
the .State Highway Patrol and the
regular license inspectors of the
Highway Department, have been ordered
to go out on the morning of
Friday, January 10th, op an enforcement
camj>aigr? against persons driving
motor vehicles without 1MI license
plates on their vehicles.
It is planned to spread a dragnet
over the entire state on the same day,
according to a memorandum sent by
fh-n M. Sawyer, Chief Highway commissioner,
to ' the director of the
Motor Vehit le iWvisnon. An effort
will be made to summons to a Magistrate's
court ail such drivers of
motor vehicles upon whose cars are
not displayed the new license tags.
The law provides that license.- must
he applied for by December 31st *nd
,t allows the Highway Department
t'ne period ending January loth to
deliver such license* as have been!

app ud for. Those -who have wade
appiualiens since January lbt are
l>eing given full cooperation by the
Highway Department in having such
licenses sent out on the same day.
However, license# applied for too late
to l>e delivered by the morning of
January 16th will subject the motor
vehicle ownerr or drivers to being
summoned to court.
The State Highway Department ha#
no financial interest in ttoe law enforcement
campaign in that all fines
assessed by magistrates fcr violation
of motor vehiaie laws remain in
the county in which the violation
occurred at>d go into the county's
general fund. '
A year ago, in a similar campaign
hundreds of persons were caught by
license inspectors, and in the ensuing
trials in magistrate'# court, the
fines imposed by magistrates were

in most cases $10. To be of as much
assistance as is possible to the motor
vehicle owners, the Highway Department
remains geared up at present
so as to expedite all applications now
coming in.

fortune of Oharlea W. MoCreery,
Columbia real estate operator, who
died recently in New York, goes to
two nieces, hi* will reveal*.

of Columbus, Ga., and Florence Kate
Van AUtyne, of New York City. The I
estate ia valued at approximately
$1,600,000. |
Mr. MoOreery also made bequests
' to other relatives, to employe* and

A mother and two of her young
daughters were found drowned in a
well on their farm near Greer shortly
after noon Wednesday. The dead
are Mrs. Mamie Cope land Brookshire,
.'10, her daughters, 4 and 1 years
old. Officers were unable to explain
the triple tragedy. The husband
and flather, Alex Brookshire,
had gone to Georgia for hogs and
he is not expected home before tomorrow.
Three other children of the
Brookshire's were at school.

Builds Up The Profits
Georgetown, Jan. 12.?A demonstration
soil-building and crop-rotation
carried on by A. J. Tilton, of
Sampit section, hoe so improved the
soil that the harvest in 11>G0 averaged
46 bu*bels%of com per acre
compared with 23 bturbel* where no
soil-building hue Ibcen practiced, according
to County Agent M, M, McGord.
Til ton's method consist* in growing
cotton, feltilized with a homemixed
complete fertilizer, followed
by a legume cover orop, usually vetch
planted with abruazi rye- This
crop is followed by coru, fertilized
with 200 pounds of nitrate of soda
per acie as wide-dressing. A legume
crop ocf soy4?eans and * cowpeae
is grown with the corn for soil improvement.
T^he entire material is
turned into the soil after harvest.
An accurate record kept by Mr.
Tilton shows that he produced 45
bushels of corn4 at a cost of 44
cents per bushel, whereas a yield of
23 bushels where no soil building
has been practiced cost 8<> cents per
bushel to produce.
The expense account on the fiveacre
field shows land rental $26,00,
nitrate of soda $29.00, ^preparation,
cultivation and harvesting $33.90, seed
$3.00, turning under previous crop
$5.25.
This crop, when marketed through
hog?, as Mr. Tilton usually does, is
more profitable than depending on
tobacco and cotton entirely. When
hog shipments first started from this
county a few years ago, Mr. Tilton
contributed some finished hogs and
has been feeding and marketing regularly
each spring and fall since.
