Bond for Fred Artis on a charge
of perjury was fixed at $1,000. Additional
bond of $2,000 was named
for Artis as a witness in other
Berkeley cases yet to be tried.
Although the jury returned their
verdict shortly before 2 o'clock, it
was not until 6 o'clodk that sentence
was imposed on the defendant, who
stood mute as the judgment of the
Court wag pronounced.
the sentencing of Thornley, a
VVq^Jd war veteran and sufferer from
tuberculosis, came after a novel
motion on the part of the state. At
the reconvening of the court following
the lunch recess, Solicitor Hydrick
moved that sentence on Thornley
not be imposed at this time, but
deferred until some future date, in
view of the fact that he is a material
witness in the further cases to be
tried against G. D. McKnight and
that the imposition of sentence prior
to the trial of the other McKnight
indictment would deprive the state!
of a very material witness.

PROSPERING WITH POULTRY |
On Many Fairfield Far ins Hons ^
Bring in Good Money
I
Winnaboro, Nov. 18.?Poultry raising
is an important side-line on many,
if not most Fajrfield farms, as may
be illustrated in the case of Mrs.
Mary (\ Adams, Shelton, who sells
eggs,1 friers and culls from a flock of
liar red Rocks and who found that
last year she clearer! over $4 per
hen all around; From her 1929 flock
of 21 hene, 168 pullets, 10 males and
77 friers, total sales for 11 months
to September 1, 1930, were $080.43,
total expenses $281.02, leaving a uet
of $399.41. Mrs. Adams raises
wheat, oats and yellow corn and
grinds the corn for mashes, cracks
it for young stock, and feeds it whole
for pullets and .hens.
Fairfield Poultry Farm owned and
operated by J. 1). Willingham at
Rockton, established five years ago,
by gradual increase now has 2,800
hens and puHerts and a quotu of cockerels.
This only strictly commercial
poultry plaht in the county sells eggs
in Columbia and to railway dining
cars, and sells feather-picked fowls
in Columbia. An average income of
$1500 per month last year, including
a good broiler business, was shown.
He counts on an average net profit
of $1.50 per bird ITer year, and sees
no * reason why farm flock owners
should not realize considerably more
?at least $2 per bird.
Up at Shelton, J. S. Stone, onetime
big cotton farmer, turned poultry
raiser last year, starting with
75 Rhode Island Reds, from which he
got 00 per cent egg production, and
now he has 500 head, and these pullets
are now starting their layingseason
so that he will sell at a good
profit fall and winter eggs. Stone
counts on egg money as his big
source of revenue since he has turned
from cotton. Formerly he grew 309
to 400 acres and made 300 bales, but
no longer sees any money in the
fleecy staple. He is growing much '
corn and expects this year 2,500 1
bushels, which he will feed to his
chickens with mill feed, fish meal
and skimmilk.
I M rs. R. H. Leminon, Winnsboro,
ha^ 200 Barred Rocks, including 160
pullets, 30 hens and 12 cockerels.
She sells eggs and friers and the
money realized contains a large percentage
of profit, because of homegrown
feeds and careful personal
