is the beat protection against
coccidioaia, one of the moat destructive
troubles among growing ehiek%
which makes iu appearance in the
dock any time between the third and
twelfth week, according to Prof. C.
I.. Morgan, chief of the poultry division.
The cause of this disease is a small
organism which enters the intestinal
tiact of the chick through eontami
.ated feed, water or particles picked
up from the soil or litter. The organism
attacks the intestinal wall
and riot only destroys the tissue hut
produces poisons which enter the
blood stream. Destruction of the intestinal
wall may also allow other
d.-cases to gain access to the system
of tite chick. Affected chicks become
I ale, thin in Mesh and listless.
Moody droppings are noted in most
cases. The disease may not only
cause heavy lyss among chicks but
may be the source of several other
troubles when infected chicks become
mature birds.
To prevent an outbreak of eoccidio.-is,
the chicks should be brooded
in rje.in houses on land that has not
beef i used by chickens for ;tt least
(lie year and that in the meantime
ha been cultivated; feed and water
-mould be supplied in clean vessels
foot on the floor or ground); the
litter carried away or burned each
v.tek; and caution taken to avoid
e;,rr>ing the infection on the poultryman's
clothes or shoes from the old
1. rd.s to the chicks.
An out break calls for prompt action.
The affected group should be
g.w-n a dose of Kpsom salts, the regular
feed reduced and all the liquid
sour milk o< buttermilk supplied that
the' chick- will con'sumo. A mash
containing P) per cent dried buttermilk
should bo substituted for the
regular feed if liquid milk is unavailable.
The brooder, temperature
should also l>e maintained at
a higher level to take care of The
weakened condition of the chicks.
An antiseptic in the drinking water
will also help prevent further spread
of the trouble. Meanwhile the house
must be kept clejyi and the litte^
burned, ? perhaps daily during the
height of an outbreak.
