Cancer Victims
Flock To California

cancer, the malignant disease which
kills 115,000 Americans every year
and for which there is no known cure,
flocked to San Francisco hopefully
and in increasing numbers today to
receive the new treatment originated
by Dr. Walter 11. Coffey and John
D Dumber.
Facilities of the Southern I'm ific
Hospital, to which Dr. Coffey anJ
Dr. Dumber are attached, were put
at tin- disposal of the sufferers and
arrangements were made to open
<11her clinics in the hope that the
new treatment would prove itself eflective
against the scourge which
medical science so far has been un<
able to conquer.
Dr. Coffey and Dr. Dumber, still
insistent that their treatment has not
proved itself as a cure, have obtained
.les'iJt* which indicate that the serum
they obtain from the cortex of the
adrenal glands of sheep is a|>le todissolve
cancerous tissues. It bus
given relief in a high percentage of
i a -e.s and some of the patients appeared
to liave been freed of the dis
a?e, although in no instance was a
i at ierit pronounced absolutely cured.
Itich and poor patients, sharing
the common desire to rid themselves
of cancerous growths, besieged the
clinic yesterday, more than 100 i?f

Dumber worked steadily with his
hypodermic needle. Patients too ill
to move from their cars were treated

Julius Dorkish, of New York, who
beat his four-year-old stepson across

a buckled belt because the child disregarded
an order, was sentenced
from six months to three years in
the penitentiary in New York when
tried Saturday. Agents of the Children's
Society arrested the man, an
alleged bigamist, on January 13th,
after neighbors had made complaints.

Bachelor Leaves
Large Legacy
Albemarle, Feb. 4. ? Speculation,
rife here aince the death last Thursday
of A. C. Heath, disappeared to-'
day an announcement was made as
to the provisions of the Heath will.
Mr. Heath was a bachelor, and his
estate, which his will indicated,, he
wanted settled and heirs paid within
the next two years, is said by friends
to be worth froin $1,000,000 to $2,000.000.
Central Methodist church of this
city, of which he was a member, will
receive $10,000. Heath Memorial
church in Union county, will receive
$5,000. Allen Heath, son of the late
J. A. Heath, a brother, will receive
$2,000 and the remainder of the estate
will be divided into five parts.
Four sisters will each receive a
fourth. They are Mrs. Eugenia NesLit,
of Charlotte; Mrs. Florence
Stokes of Great Falls, S. C.; Mrs. I).
F. Bivens, of Great Falls; and Mrs.
Maude Masse.y of Waxhuw. The other
fifth of the estate will Ik* divided
i qually among Allen Heath,- Laura
I loath and Mary Heath' McMillan,
i hildren of Will ('. Heath, of Monroe,
tortner legislator and a brother of the
deceased.
The Stanly Hank and Trust company,
of which Mr. Heath was president,
was named as executor.
Widespread investigation of the attempt
Wednesday against the life of
President Pascual Artiz Kubio of
Mexico is being pushed by Emilo
Fortes (ill, minister of the interior.
An addition to the assassin, Daniel
1-lores, who is held in military,prison
in Mexico City, about twenty others
were under detention in Mexico City.
President Kubio is continuing to improve
after a second operation for
removal of a splinter in his jaw,
where the bullet of the assassin
struck him.
