Heavy Toll of Lives During December. i / Columbia, Jan. 14.?'Thirty persona were killed, 08 *erioualy injured und 07 slightly injured in 174 accident* on South Carolina highways in December, according to the monthly report of the State Highway department. Thirty of the accidents were reported as caused by careless driving, 16 by reckless giving, 26 by speeding, 83 by recklessness due to intoxication, 10 by dazzling headlights, 12 by one or both lights out, 14 by defects of motor vehicles, 0 v by skidding, 10 by drivers losing control, two by puncture or blowout, one by driver falling "asleep, five by carelessness of pedestrians, and six by causes which were not reported. # Nine pedestrians were killed, five being reported as struck down by motor vehicles due to carelessness of pedestrians, one run down by speeding motor vehicle while walking highway and three run over by motor vehicles, the drivers of which were under the influence of liquor. Four persons were killed in collisions of motor vehicles, eight were killed when motor vehicles overturned and two were killed in collisions of motor and horse-drawn \ chicles. Two persons were killed when cars ran off bridges, two when thrown from cars to pavement, and one when the car struck a culvert hcadwall. One person was killed whert' the car left the road and struck a pile of crossties and one when the car skidded from the road into a ditch. Death From Spinal Meningitis Orangeburg, Jan. 10.?George II. Blair, 51, -of the Fork section of Orangeburg county, died at his home tonight after having beep ill for three days of cerebro-spinal meningitis. He was the fourth member of his r?mily to succumb to the disease lthin the last two weeks, and the ninth i"et'm cleaimed by meningitis in the Cordova area. Mr. Blair tonight followed his vife, one son, Rodney, and a daughter, Erline, all having been fatally strickev since Christmas. Three sons, Orrie, Austin and Walter are the only surviving members of the family. They have been moved to a tenant house on the Blair farm and are being cared for there. BOK DEAD Immigrant Boy Who Scaled Heights in America Dies in Florida Lake Wales, Fla., Jan. 9.?Edward K. Bok, who came to this country as an immigrant boy from the Netherlands and carved out for himself a distinguished position in public life as an editor, author and philanthropist, died at his estate near here today. He was 66 years old. Mr. Bok became ill shortly after his arrival with Mrs. Bok from Merion, Pa., four days ago and his condition became critical yesterday. He passed away at 4:25 a. m. today, suffering from an acute heart attack. Following his retirement in 1919 as editor of the Ladies' Home Journal, a magazine 5or whose success he was | largely responsible. Mr. Bok spent much of his time in Florida. Within a short distance of his estate rises one of his principal philanthropic en-! terprises?a carillon of 61 bells erected on a bird sanctuary. , For the dedication of the Mountain Lake singing tower and preserve Calvin Coolidge, then president, made a special trip from Washington last February 1st and delivered an address in which he accorded high praise to the accomplishments of Mr. Bok. Mr. Bok, his friends said, considered the tower und its grounds a tribute to his grandparents, sturdy folk of the old world Who found enjoyment in music. In his 30 years as an editor Mr. Bok was associated with Cyrus H. K. Curtis, wealthy Philadelphia publisher, and in that city he was known as a patron of the fine arts. He married a daughter of Mr. Curtis, the former Mary Louise Curtis, and they had two sons, Curtis, who resides at Rosemont, Pa., and Cary, who lives at Morion. Pa. To Aid Needy Raleigh, N. C., Jan. 11.?Mrs. Kate Burr Johnston, state commissioner of public welfare, said today that workers of the department would be sent Monday to various counties to or| ganize county relief committees for I families reported to be "on the verge 1 of starvation" and in serious want, i Results of a questionnaire sent out by the department to every county indicates "a good deal of suffering and unemployment exists," Mrs. Johnson said, "mostly in eastern North Carolina. Believe Woman Fainted In Air Raleigh, N. C., Jan. 11.?Officials of tihc Curtiss-Wright flying service here attributed tho fatal crash of Mrs. Neva Paris, head of the woman5)) division of that organization, at Woodbine, Gn., Thursday to a fainting spell in mid-air. The statement was issued following examination of the report of a Ourtiss pilot dispatched from Columbia, S. C., to investigate the crash. The report stated that eye-witnesses so id she was flying at a height of 2,000 feet when the plane went into a dive. The investigation indi-. cated the motor of the plane was. functioning normally when she fell,, they said. Mrs. Paris had complained that she was not feeling well before taking off from Columbia, S. C. Friends there stated she was en route to Jacksonville. h"1 .V Babe Ruth is demanding a threeyear contract from the management of the New York Yankees, under which the Bamlbino is to receive a salary of $85,000 per year.
