Lime Benefits Crops
Boosting Legumes
KxperimenU conducted by the agronomy
division of the South Carolina
Kxperiment Sfhtion indicate that
the beneficial effect of lime on such
crops as cotton and corn is through
the increased growth of the legume
crops planted in the rotation, says
Dr. T, 8. Huie, agronomist. Where
lime is applied directly to either cotton
or corn the increase in yield is
very slight, hut when it is applied
to a legume . crop which is to be
turned under for soil improvement,
the growth of the legume is greatly
increased, and this additional amount
of organic matter increases the yield
of the succeeding crop.
"For special crops such as alfalfa,
or where the soil is distinctly acid,
lime is necessary," continues Dr.
Huie. "For the average conditions in
the state, the use of one ton of
ground limestone per acre once every
three to four years is recommended.
Lime aids in the growth and devel
opment of the legume crops, und it
increases the rapidity of their decomposition

contained by them is released for tiie
use ?.f luture crops. Observations indicate
that under certain .conditions
cotton may be more subject to "Rust"
following applications of lime. Cum
should be taker to sec that a sufficient
amount of potash is applied i
to prevent this."
The one greatest need of Kershaw i
county farms is humus. The best i
ways to get humus are (1) grow and
turn under legume cr>p<, (2) save
and apply manure (keep cows). Both
legumes and manure put large itmounts
of nitrogen into the soil. Nitrogen
is the highest priced fertilizer
we buy. For best results with legumes
our lands must be limed. Lime
applied to our pastures will bake the
legumes therein, as clovers, more successful.
Sweet clover is probably the
most valuable pasture and hay crop.
A little lime will make it possible
to grow sweet clover. Lime is cheap.
Try a patch of some legume with
lime under it.
