In Suicide Pact

to death, rather than live in separation
from her, will not receive his

her aide.
In a note telling of his suicide
plana which led to recovery of his
body and that of Elsie Poovey, 18yea*-ol<!

The hoie, received by Luther's brother
a few hours after the couple
disappeared here last Sunday, read:
"I cai.not live without Elsie. We
will die ,n each others arms, I want

same grave. You will ftud pur bodies
ip the Catawba river at the steel
bridge."

cemetery while 'Turner will find a

Searchers who dragged grappling
hooks through the muddy waters of
the Catawba located the bodies of
the boy and girl yesterday shortly
after noun, Clasped in each others
armB, the two were seated in Turner's
submerged car.
Parent- of the girl today reiterated
disbelief she had joined Turner
in a suicidal pact. Their theory is
that Elsie's refusal to marry him until
she had finished her college course
led young Turner to plan the death
of both ami that the girl knew nothing
of Turner's plans prior to the
plunge into the river.
Undertakers who prepared the bodies
for burial said there .were no
marks of violencife on the girl's body.
Humorous and Tragic.
The following letter was addressed
to Sheriff ,J. P. Howard, with touches
of humor, and yet mirroring the
plight of many farmers:

The body of Pilot Thomas P. Nelson,
air mail flyer, was found Thursday
afternoon by a rabbit hunter near
Chagrin Falls, Ohio, after the flyer
and his plane had been missing since
early Monday morning." Nelson lost
his life while flying between Cleveland,
Ohio, and Bellefonte, Bau and
the accident was dtie to a heavy snow
storm prevailing at the time.

Slumps With Nature
'The rise in importjinee of the out
flower industry, and improved trans -j
portation methods which have made
it possible tb secure real flowers-of
almost every variety in any part of
the United States at any time, has
had-a-noticeable effeict on the artifl?
cial flower industry. Government
census figures for 1925 disclosed a
drop of 4.8 per cent for this industry's
volume of business as compared
with the total for 1923, the year of
the preceding census.
Ddring the same period, the florists
industry was having one of its
greatest periods of growth, according
to the Society of American Florists
and Ornamental Horticulturists,
an organization composed of 7,000
growers and retailers of flowers.
In addition to the natural preference
for real flowers and the greater
variety of flowers made available
through transportation and distribution
improvements, the Society gives
the increased advertising of the florists
in newspapers, and the national
advertising sponsored by the Society,
as the prinaipal reasons for the gain
shawp by in/iuatry.

county, on Tuesday entered a plea of

duet and was sentenced by Judge J.
K. Henry , to serve six months in the , ,

$1,000. On the same day Will/ Barnett,
negro, charged with murder,
was convicted without recommendation
to mercy. Barnett killed his
wife.
Miss Mary Calhoun, lineal descendant
of John C, Calhoun, died at t
Clemson College Tuesday night in
the old Calhoun mansion, where she
had made her "home. She had been #
in poor health for three years and
had lived at Clemson College for 25
years.
