SPEAKING OF NIGHT-KIDKUH
1 met up with Jimmie Slick down
town the other night. Jimmy clerks
in a grocery store. He had a brand
new Ford with rumple seat and 4wheel
breaks and balloon spares and
everything. The last time I had seen
Jimmie, he was still skeeting around
in his old 1028 Ford.

Jimmie seemed somewhat apologetic
for owning the new car. He
said that his old car the 11>28- model,
bought in December) was getting
kinder rattly, and that it wouldn't be
long before he would have to buy new
tires for it, so he traded it in. He intimated
that he simply wasn't able to
put out uny money pn the old boat.
(And 1 wondered how he'd be able to
run a new one then).
The garage man allowed Jimmie 1
hunched and 75 dollars for his car and
cancelled the 4 unpaid instalments
thereon, and this left only 7 hundred
and 55 dollars to be "installed" on
the new car, all of which was written
down in the mortgage which Jimmie
signed. Jimmie .seemed perfectly
charmed with his investment (Yes,
that's what tie called it?investment).
He had his initials put on both doors
in gold letters bo's Jie would know it
was gone if anybody stole it.
Jimmie said business was rather
dull at the store. But he felt sure the
boss wax going to keep him right on
through the summer. (He said he was

the best sales man Mr. Pnool had.)
Jimmie's wages are 17 dollars a
I week, and after he pays his monthly)
instalments on his car, he will still
have nearly 4 dollars to pay his boar 1
wjth and buy gas for the car and
visit the soda fountain about 7 times
ia day, and meet his other incendiary
[ expenses.
1 believe Jimmie will be able to
meet his obligations all right if Mr.
Phool doesn't bust before the final
instalment rolls around. Jimmie
counts the cash at night, and if Mr.
Phool were to deprive him of that
privilege, no doubt u few payments
would lapse, unless, of course cash
trade picked up in his department.
Jimmie dresses mighty well to be a
mere country lad with only a few
months in the city.
Jimmie is popular with all of the
best looking flappers. He take3 one to
the picture show nearly every night,
and on Sunday he bundles one up in
his car and drives her up into the
mountains or down to the beach
where she can cool off ansoforth.' (It
is nwfulh warm in <>ur town these
Sabbaths). It is quite commendable in
Jimmie to be so industrious, and there
are several other boys In town that's
making good just like Jimmie is. His
folks and their folks will certainly
miss them when they are gone?to
the penitentiary.
Fetch l:p Some Ice Water.
While wandering around over the
world seeking what I might devour, I
frequently run into the unusual as
well as the uncommon. Now just last
week, I stopped at a nice Hotel in a
nice town. The man agreed to let me
have a rom for a whole night for only
$6.00, and because I got in late, the
rate apparently had nothing to do
with the price of that room.
Well, that room had a bath attached
and a good bed with the hotel's
name engraved on the counterpane
and a pretty brass spittoon was in
evidence right close to the little desk,
but as I don't chew or smoke or
drink, I found no use for the deposijtory.
The carpet on the floor was soft
and oozy, ami everything was "apple
. pie", but durncd if I can see why the
' use of a room for K hours is worth
$6.00. but that's the price I paid. A
hoarder in an ordinary city can rent
a room as good as that in every respect
for 10 dollars a month.
I slept as hard as I could that night
so's I'd get my money's worth, but if
"down yonder" is any hotter than it
was in 708. may the paths that I am
to trod from now on be strewed with
fewer temptations. I sweated and perspired
and rolled and tumbled tiH almost
time for the cock to crow> and
woke up .7 hours later with a crick it)
my neck. There was no electric fa*
nvaliable; they went with the "10dollars-and-up"
roms, only.
I had occasion to gaze upon a real

dissolve the corporation and liquidate.
The board of directors were empowered
to wind up the affairs of the
company. The
Herald plant was wrecked tyy
the fire that burned out the second
floor offices in the Traynham building
July 5, hence the decision to discontinue
the publication.'

The orchestra and everything were
probably worth my H dollars, and inasmuch
as I had 3 dollars and 25
cents left when the time came to depart
therefrom, I suppose to complain
would be anarchy,however, 2 dollars
s enough to pay for any of those 6dollar
rooms.
Parson Elopes With
His Choir Singer
Harrisburg, Pa., July 26.?~While
authorities continued a search for the j
Rev. John Wssley Gable, pastor of
the Knheut Church of God, and Mrs.
John Miller, choir singer, who disappeared
from their homes Tuesday
night in the pastor's automobile, both!
Miller and Mrs. Gable remained
steady today to forgive the elopers'
in case they should return.
Mrs. Gable last night revealed the
contents of a note left for her by the
pastor in which he promised to send
her money as soon as he was settled,
she said.
Miller told authorities his wife had
threatened to leave because of the
burden of caring for four small sons.
He said his wife told him Tuesday, I
in speaking of the pastor; "I love
him and he 'oves me."
The elopement been me known when
Miller returned from his work Tuesday
night and was handed a note by
one of his sons. It was signed by
Mrs. Miller and read: ,
"I know you won't love me any
more since I did this, daddy, dear.
P'caso forgive me. K/ss all the boys
or me every day and be kind. Bye
>ye, daddy and boys."
Gable was a frequent caller at the
Miller home. He had been teaching
Mrs. Miller music. They frequently
sang duets in church.
Paul Gable, New Cumberland, a
pn of the missing preacher, told poicc
his father withdrew several hundred
dollars from a bank Tuesday.
Gable is 46 and Mrs. Miller 33.
