An Object Lesson
One of the Finest of New England's Mills - 6 - ' *j
To be Sold at Auction June 18th-19th
A representative large mill located in one pf the most prominent
textile sections of New England. A mill wfhich, according to the auc- ?
tioneers* advertisement, has "machinery and equipment including 170,000
ring spindles and is complete for carding, combing and Spinning
American and Egyptian cotton yarns in counts from 8 to 80. It is a thigh*
speed mill with modern machinery throughout. The machinery and
eqirijftnept j?f Mill No. 1 was all purchased new in and' sino*1911.
Of Mill No.r2r in and since 1917. The mill was in successful operation 0
up to the time of the textile strike in New Be.dford about a year ago." ji
The illustration below will give an idea of its magnitude and its modern ^
building?. * 'p- ' # ;,v , . ' ' %
This is but one of titoe large number qf New England mills that have r
been forced to shut down following labor disturbances. Antagonistic
labor and adverse legislation have contributed toward greatly reducing
the number of spindleis in place in New England.- The U. S. Departmenft>f
Commerce shows a reduction in spindles from 19,001,661 in
February 1923, to 15,008,764 in April 1929?a decline of 3,992,897
spindles. J*
What has become of the thousands of workers who earned their
living at the mills which were forced to close? Does thq future hold j J
in store such industrial tragedies for South Carolina? *
