New Federal Judge

I Judge J. Henry Johnaojn announced
in opening the court of general ?* ?*
slon* yesterduy afternoon, that it
gave him very great pleasure to tell
the people assembled in the court
that he had been informed that
Solicitor J. Dyles Glenn of Chester,
and of the Sixth judicial circuit, had
been appointed hy President Hoover
to the extra Federal district Judgeship
for South Carolina, which office
was created by act of congress at the
session ending on March 4th last.
The information that Mr. Glenn's
name had been presented to the senate
hy President Hoover for confirmation
as a Federal ju/jgp, was made
known to Mr. Glenn early yesterday
afternoon in a telegram from Senator
Cole I,. Please, who was directly responsible
for the creation of the extra
judgeship for the state of South
Carolina. * ,
The announcement was received
with a gix-ut deal of pleasure and
gratification by Mr. Glenn's friends in
the court house and all present took
advantage of the first opportunity to
extend their congratulations and best
wishes, and at the sume time therewas
a feeling of, regret too that he
would shortly retire from the office
I of solicitor of this circuit, which office
he has so acceptably filled during
the last six years, beginning in April,
l'j2d, under appointment of Governor
Mclx-od, to succeed the Hon. J K.
Henry of Chester, but recently
elevated to the circuit bench.
To be sure Mr. Glenn felt complimented
at being appointed to the Federal
district judgeship hy his friend,)
Mr. Hoover, and stated that he is
duly grateful for the honor, but at
tiie same time he said that he had
enjoyed the work of the solicitorship
and would give up that office with
some degree of regret because of the
many friendships that he hud made
during his service in the office during
the last six years.
The newly appointed judge is a native
of Chester, having been born in

coui se the World war came on and he
i volunteeredservice in Belgium
j with the American food relief commission
under tin- direction of Mr.
He riant Hoover. After remaining in
; this service for a time ho went to
j Ireland for study. While in Ireland
he received a request from Mr.
, Hoover tt> come back to F.ngland and
; to again join the relief forces in
Belgium. This he did and continued
until after the close of the war. In
his tils, as in the case of all other
student? at Oxford, Mr. Glenn was
o.vardcd the A. fi. degree in juris,
pi udonce or law. the degree was
j termed at Oxford. After returning

Sarah Terrell, a niece of Qovemor
Terrell of Georgia. Mr. and Mrs.
Glenn have two children, a daughter
and a son, 9 and 6 years old. 'Hie
son bears the name of John Lylea ;
Glenn, 3rd.
Of course Solicitor Glean does not
know when he will be called upon to ,
assume the new judicial office to
which he haa been appointed; but it
will most likely be several weeks. As
to just what bearing hia appointment
may have upou hta nerving in the
prosecution of the caae of the State
| against King, which ia now scheduled
for tria-l in Chester the first week of
July, eannot,J?e irt^ted at this time.
Escapes Prison To
"Get" His Enemy
Davenport, Oklii., April 26.
"Young Hill" Tighlman, who escap
ed from the Tennessee penitentiary
a month ago to avenge the death of
the elder Tighlman, famous frontier
peace officer, waa on hia way back
(o prison today, his quest lost by a
cant fifteen minutes.
Tighlman wua arrested a quarter
of an hour before by Willey Lynn, a
former prohibition officer, who shot
and killed hia father 5 years ago, arrived'on
a bus. "The man who shot
my father waa on that stage that arrived
a few minutes ufter you got
ine," he told Marvin Roberta, chief of
police. "I thought perhaps I'd get
u chance to meet him." He had
heard that Wynn was a passenger on
the bus and was waiting on him witn
two guns.
Noting Tighlman was. serving a
sentence in the Tennessee penitentiary
for uttempted robbery of a
Memphis bank when he escaped.
The elder Tighlman, known as one of
the most fearless peace officers of
Wild west days, was shot and killed
in an altercation with Lynn.
