Long Flight Broken
By Huge Army Plane
Metropolitan Airport, L<>? Angelea,
Calif., Jan. 7.?The amiy'e endurance
flight plane, the Question Mark, glided
to u perfect landing here at JJ:07
o'clock thik afternoon after a recordsmashing
flight of 160 houis, 40
minutes and 16 seconds. The ship
flew continuously for more than nix
days, and nights, following its takeoff
here New Year's morning at
7 :20 40 o'clock.
The end of one of the greatest
flights in all aviation histoiy came
after a crew of five weary men had
fought constantly against time and
motors, which piled trouble in a heap
upon them an hour before the landing.
Thirty hours before their work
seemed near an end when the motors t,
balked, but the trouble cleared away,
and the flight went on. As though (j
in protest to the great strain place.] ^
upon them, the motors finally stutter- ^
ed, one went "dead" and with an j
other rapidly failing, they forced the
nose of the ship earthward. Previous
motor trouble had been almost negli- .
gible. ^
As the great black-bodied tri-mo- j
tored Kokker with its shining yellow |
wings touched earth almost upon ^
the spot where it had left so many ^
hours before, a cabin-door swung ^
open, and from it stepped the crew. ?,
In the milling crowd of laughing,
cheering army officer*, they were the
calmest of all, broad amiles spread- ^
ing across their faces us they heard
the acclaim to their dfforts.
Not one of the five, though wornlooking,
faltered. Maj. Carl Spatz,
commanding officer, Capt. Ira C.
Faker, Lieuts. Harry A. Halverson
and El wood R. Queaudu and Staff Sgt.
Roy Hooe walked to a waiting car,
which carried them to a hangar and
th?*n to Clover field, Santa Monica, p
Calif:, for an offieiul physical examination.
Just what happened aboard the
Question Mark wu*k told by Lieuten- F
ant Quesada in ?imple words as he
lounged in the automobile speeding
to the medical fcuHtc.
"Just as I letft .the cuiiirois at 1 S
o'clock this-afterrnnon, Captain Eaker
took the wheel knd the left motor
went dead. We sent Sergeant Hooe ..
out on the catwalk, but his weight L
was too heavy for the unstable condition
of the Question Mark.
"We knew then that the flight was
over. We droppnd the gas within two J*
or three minutes after we had taken
it.
"This was nrtt the first trouble.
Saturday night we thought it was
all over. All three engines lost their |
power. That was fouled spark-plug*.
We were all ready to end the flight 1
but finally we cleaned that up. It was
not necessary for anyone to go out on
the catwalk then. The first time during
the flight thart it was necessary
to go out was at 1 o'clock today,
when Sergeant Hooe went out to the
left motor.
"It was worse than spark-plug trouble
this time. It looked like valves.
Shortly after 1 o'clock the right mo- p
tor began to weaken. Then we knew
the flight was about to end."
When the plane Handed, the left
motor was silent. The right motor
was functioning, but a stream of oil i
minuted from it, and the center motor ' *
if
was able to make but 1,300 revolutions
a minute.
Two thousand persons, who swarm-!
ed
about the airport, tiheored wildly
us the plane taxied across the field. . ?
scorn's of army officers went into wild I'
demonstrations of delight at the unheard
of record that the plane had set
up.
