here today. At least 10,000 persons

eluded a Hatfield family reunion, and
lasted virtually all day.
The celebrat'ioa was held in the
.hadow of the marble statue which
bevil Anae's" relatives had carved
wi ,y ",ui transported to the West
Virginia mountains. The , statue is
thirteen feet high and is an exact
replica, save in size, of the old feudist
who led his hordes against the McCoy
factions. The statue shows Hat field
wearing mountain garb, even to
the boota, and his long hair and beard
and depicted.
Three beeves were barbecued on the
grounds and food of other sorts were
brought by the Hatfields and their
connection from far and near. Religious
services were - conducted by
Rev. Joe C. Hatfield, of Mattewan,

Speeches extolling the merits of the
deceased patriarch were made by
General W. C. Conley, candidate for
| United States senator from the same
state, and by United States Commissioner
Ira P. Hagey. Misses Glenna
und Dorothy? R0)y sang the old songs
dear to the mountaineer.'
An ovation was tendered Mrs. Levme
Hatfield, eighty-six-year-old widow
of. "Devil Anae? whilu Mra .B^tty
Hatfield, of Huntington, and Mrs. Rej
beccn Hatfield, of Logan, W. Va.,
both over eighty years old, were welcomed
warmly" b> their kinspeople.
Mrs. Betty Hatfield is the mother of
former Governor. Hatfield and the
wido.W of Elias, brother of "Devil
Anse/' "v ^
Approximately 100 members of the
immediate Hatfield families went to
the old home, made famous in song
uraL story 0f Hatfteld-McCoy feuds.
Among those of some note present
I were Smith Hatfield, only living
brother of "Deyil Anse;" Bob Hatfield,
son-of "Anse/' andhis-two now,
John and 'Craig. Smith Hatfield is

The Hatfields continue prominent
In affairs of Eastern Kentucky and
West Virginia. Most of the McCoys
are gone. The feud waged for years
in this, Pike county, Kentucky, and
counties in West Virginia across from
Jtere.--Many were killed on both sides,
including men, women and children.
I Recently .Sheriff Dennis Hatfield, of
J Logan,- W. Va., grandson of "Devil
Anse," was in Pikeville and there
made friends, with Jim MoCoy, one of
the men who fought Hatfield's kin
years ago. They linked arms add
had their photographs taken.

As the time approaches for the fair,
the excellence of the forth coming
exhibition grows. The fair is going
to be even better than the officials
had hoped. The exhibits are better
and more varied than ever before

to be unusuallyifiigh class.

that the crowd seem to be " preparing
to stay more than one day. Thursday,
of course, will draw the largest
crowd but the attendance will be
more evenly distributed this year
than for a long time.
