in the dining room. The table had

Surrounding the cake were two
large pink candles in silver candle

streamers of pink satin ribbon were
suspended from the lights and caught

the caboose of a freight train in
the Southern railway yards near the'

car where they entered. Searching
nearby officers found a complete convict
garb, Where it is thought the
thief changed his clothes. A pair of

I stolen from the caboose. Officers
have not been notified of the escape
of any convict and are at a loss to
understand where the convict garb

At Blacksburg and Gaffney, last
Friday and Saturday, 11,000 pounds
of poultry was shipped in a car and
brought the producers about $2,200.
This brought the total for the year in
Cherokee county to' 64,000 pounds for
which $12,000 ?m received. Later
shipments are expected to raise the
Cherokee county total to double the
40,0^0 pounds of poultry it shipped
last year,. ?
The first bale &t the' 1988 cotton

In Lincoln county, North Carolina,
recently, thieves carried off three Jer- \
sey cows in a truck from one farm, ]
another farmer had 40 hams stolen
from his smokehouse, 30 prize chick- 1
ens were burglarized, and a large
amount of other stealing of hams and

The peaches are dropping off the
trees in Spartanburg county to an extent
that threatens to seriously lessen
the crop. The county agent and
l>each growers are unable to account
for the lqss unless it be the effect of
previous cold weather. All varieties
are affected including early Elbertas
which make the bulk of the crop
there. * x
The jury disagreed after the long
trial in a Morganton, N. C., court of
a law suit to determine how much of
a reward offered for a negro murderer
would go to the sheriff and how
much to three men who sued the of-!
ficer for more than he was willing to
pay them. The sheriff shot and killed
the outlaw by himself, but three
men claimed their help in the chasei
entitled them to an equal division of
the large reward.
Fire destroyed the barn and two fine
mules, and a lot of feed was burned,!
at the home plantation of R. R. Haf-}
ner on the Ricbburg road out of
,Chester.
The atate bureau haa determined
that North Carolina will have a surplus
in its treasury of $2,067,000 at
the end of the fiscal year, next Sunday.
