boy who left Camden twenty years

Ctundcn Planning Fur
New Paving Program
Camden has Just completed its
second paving program and is looking
forward to a third. The South
em I'avmg company of Chattanooga
has just completed ita contract with
the city, the following streets having
been paved under it: Church, be- j
tween DoKalb and Kutledge; Market,!
between DeKalb Kutledge; the ;
eastern and wqstern extremities j
of DeKalb to the city limits; the!
southern extremity of Broad to;
the' city limit in addition to these,j
storm sewers, curbs and gutters !
have been laid on Chesnut, between
Fair and Mill, and on Hanip
ton, between Broad and Lvttleton.
According to Mayor C. r. IhiBose,
it is probable that other streets will
be paved or curbed and guttered in
the near future with money that the
city council expects to receive from
the state highway department in the
way of a refund upon portions of
highways Nos. 1 and 2C, which were
paved in a sparsely settled portion
of the city. It is understood that
this refund will enable the city to
put ubout $30,000 in additional street
improvements.
WOMAN GETS ACROSS
Left New Foundland Sunday and
Landed on Welch Coast Monday
Burry Port, Wales, June 18.?While
all England and Ireland waited on
tiptoe this morning to welcome the
American trans-Atlantic plane Friendship,
from her Atlantic flight, Miss
Amelia Earhart, the first woman to
conquer the great ocean by air, and
her two companions settled down unexpected
in Burry Estuary, Wales,
shortly after noon today.
The Friendship without warning,
slipped in over Bristol channel which
is at the mouth of the River Severn
and came down in Burry Estuury several
miles off Burry Port.
It was 12:40 p. m., just 20 hours
and 49 minutes after the Friendship
took oij "from Trepassey, New Foundland,
where she had been held about
ten days by unfavorable weather conditions
and difficulty in making a
take-off with her great load of gasoline.
The tri-motored ship, the first
equipped with pontoons to make the
direct crossing, came to rest as the
tjde was fully out and the pontoons
soon, diove their noses into the sand
elbse to shore.
A launch was sent out immediately
to the plane to determine the wishes
of the fliers and render any assistance
possible.
Not in years has this tiny port experienced
such a thrill as when the
big plane swooped into the estuary
carrying the first woman ever to
cross the Atlantic by air.
M iss Buddin Has Dance
On last Saturday night Miss Olivia
Buddin invited the young set from
the seventh grade to be her guests at
a dance given at her home on Cheanut
street. During the evening punch
and cake were served and dancing
was enjoyed until a late hour.
M iss Savage Entertains
On last Thursday afternoon Miss|
Helen Savage entertained at bridge..
There were six tables attractively ar-i
ranged for the game where a profus- J
ion of cut flowers added color to the;
setting. Among those present were
a number of out of town guests. The
hostess served delightful refreshments
consisting of a salad course,
followed by a sweet course.
Met With Mrs. Barrett
The Wednesday Afternoon Bridge
Club met this week with Mrs. Chapman
H. Barrett at her home on Chesnut
street. The only substitutes for
the afternoon were: Mrs. George
Coleman and Miss Dorothy Smith.
Mrs. W. L. Goodale won the top score
prize. After the game the hostess
served an ice course.
His Body Brought Here
The remains of Mr. Thomas Jones,
who died in Fayetteville, N. C., last
Wednesday were brought to Camden
for burial on Friday Mr. Jones married
Miss Lou Nettles, daughter of
the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward S. Nettles,
of this city. He leaves his widow
and four children surviving. He
left Camden .many years ago to make
his home at Lumberton, N. C., where
hie was engaged in the insurance
business. He was a brother of the
late W. J. Jones, of this city and will
be remembered by many of our older
citizens. As a young man he was regarded
as one of the finest baseball
Slayers in this city and before the
ays of professional ball he ranked
with the best in this section. He was
popular in his home town.
Cotton Squares
i Dennis Bird, formerly on land near
Sanders Creek, brought to Camden
Saturday a stalk of cotton measuring
more than fourteen inches which
had many Squares on it, byt so far

The Woman's Missionary Union of
Kershaw Association will hold a
quarterly meeting at Horeb Baptist
church, June 29,. opening at 11 o'clock.
This church is located near Dalcell
on the Sumter-Bamden road to the
left after passing the new school

underpass. The Huick was driven by I
Mrs. M. McCann and Mrs. W. T. Tarrant
of Camden. S. C.
Mr. Colson and Mr. Hardee were
picked up by a Mr l.ohman of Archer
and brought to trie county hospital.
Both men were m a semi-conscious
.state, Mr. Colson not regaining consciousness
until late yesterday afternoon.
Neither men were able to give
any detuils of the accident, saying
that they were unable to determine
who was at fault.
An X-ray picture taken of Mr. Colson
was badly blurred, but doctors
could not determine any bone fractures.
Another X-ray picture will be
taken this morning. Mr. Colson was
cut on the lip, and ear and hud several
other minor injuries. He is also
suffering front shock.
Mr. Hardee sustained a bud-cut on
the head and neck and a broken rib.
He was discharged from the hospital
yesterday afternoon and was reported
as resting easily at his home last
night.
Both machines were bauiy damaged.

Fla., Sun of last Wednesday.
Mrs. McCann and Mrs. Tarrant are
wives of men employed on the paving
construction now going on in this
county, and reside in the Smith residence
on North Lyttleton street, near
Hobkirk Inn. After being delayed
several days in Gainesville they continued
their trip on through Florida.
Except for some bruises the ladies
were not hurt.

Obey The Traffic Laws;
Look over a few of the following
traffic laws which will be strictly en- j
forced: No motor driven vehicle shall J
exceed the speed limit of 25 miles
per hour?"Some portions of Broad
and DeKalb Streets you must not exceed
16 miles per hour."
It is" unlawful to turn any corner
at a speed limit exceeding six miles;'
an hour. All automobiles must be
equipped with two front lights and
one light in the rear. . ' j
All vehicles must turn on the right;
of silent sentinels except fire engines.
Upon the approach of any fire ap- paratus
every vehicle shall draw to
the curb of street and remain at a
standstill until such apparatus shall V
have passed.
No vehicles are allowed to follow
fire truck except regular firemen ex- .
eeeding the speed limit, and hot to
approach within 500 feet of said j
truck, when said truck is going to or
returning from a fire. ,
All motor vehicle owners are warned
that the above rules and regula
tions aTe to be strictly enforced and
all -police officers have been instructed
to see that these orders are carried
