Famous Polo Ponies Killed
New York, June 9,?A pair of
famous polo ponies were killed in their'
stable today at the Me&dowbrook
club when a Curtis# Calcon observation
plane, undergoing flight tests by
two army fliers from Mitchell Field,
L. I., snapped oflT its wings and plunged
to earth from 3,000 feet. The
/lieiB took to their parachutes and
I were saved although one of them
landed in a tree and dangled precariously
for some time before he
could set himself free.
| The horses, Guy Hoy and Anaconda,
were crushed to death when
the plane crashed through the roof
| and second story of the stable, its
terrific impact sweeping everything in
its path straight through to the
ground. Two grooms, who had been
in their quarters on the second floor
a few minutes earlier were saved by
the fact that they had gone about
some outside chores.
I The two ponies were owned by W.
Averill Harriman who had raised and
trained them from colts. Gay Boy
was ridden by Malcolm Stevenson in
the last international polo matches at
Meadowbrook. Mr. Harriman was in
the club at the time of the crash and
hastened to the barn where .he was alj
most overcome on learning of the
(tragic fate of his swift and surej
footed favorites.
