KINGS MOUNTAIN AS OF YORK
Not vMuch Change Since Ferguson Died
and Patriots Won Crucial Battle
Commenting on the fact that congress
has authorized an appropriation
of $1,000 for the survey of a park
to include the battlefield "of Kings
Mountain, which historic spot is in
South Carolina, near the North Carolina
state line, The Chicago Tribune
sayB:
"When the spot has the protection
of government preserve there will bo
given to the future one of the most
interesting battlefields in the country."
The Chicago Tribune is correct
in saying: "Modem life has not
crept very close to this isolated
range ? One of the fine roads of
North Carolina is a mile or so from
it, but the immediate approaches are
roads of the past."
A visit to the battleground several
years ago impressed one with the factj
that save for nature taking its own
course in the growth and decay of
trees, and the gradual washing of tho
soil, the lay of the land is just about
as it was when the heroes of Kings
Mountain vanquished^ the intrepid
Ferguson, who died fighting to th^
last, and his band. The description
by The Tribune is accurate.
"There is a rough way up to the
slope by the crags and rock knolls
where the mountaineers sustained the
bayonet charges of Ferguson's Tory
regiment by slipping from them and
returning to the attack. The nation
has put up a monument to commemorate
the success of the Indian fighters.
The descendants of the mem
have put up another. Ferguson's
grave remains under its mound of
rocks at the foot of a slope where
the dead officer was carried for
burial by the victors after nearly
all his men had been killed, or captured."?Spartanburg
