Former Judge M. L. Smith was in
Florence thie week assisting Solicitor
Gasque in the prosecution of the
Cake City bank robbers, in which one
drew a sentence of fourteen years.
Mrs." >Henfy Allen returned this
week to lwsr home in Greenville after

Steve L. Perry. Mrs. Allen returned
to Greenville in company with Mr.
and Mrs. R. E. Allen who also were
recent visitors to Camden.
Dr. H. O. Barnes, of Roanoke,
Virginia, and Mr. Preston Barnes,
of Union, S. C., were visitors in' Cam-den
_this week. _ Both are natives of
Camden and cambe back to renew old
acquaintances. Dr. Barnes is a
prominent pharmacist in Roanoke

Celebrates Wade.Hampton Day .
Wade Hampton Defy was celebrated
at chapel exercises Wednesday at the
Camden School with appropriate exercises
by the Timrod Literary Society.

Notwithstanding we have always
believed we lu-i your support in
school affairs, we want to express
our appreciation of your Increased in* j
terest, which is shown in the Parent
Teachers Association. However, there
is a very vital part of our work to
which we would call your earnest attention.
The teachers of the Camden High
school have for long endeavored to
instill jin their pupils the necessity
for study, but we feel that in pr^Jer
to reap the best results we must
have the cooperation of every parent.
It has become a great problem to us
and one which needs the concentrated
effort on the part of teachers and
parents. There has been a laxity
on the part of parents in the pa it
and wo know that we have only to
[rail your attention to the numerous
failures in High (School, the majority
due to the lack of study and you'
will realize, what results a little at*
tcntion on your part will bring for
benefit to both.
Probably a few suggestions, cases
that have been observed from time
to time, will nid the parents.
Do not allow the pupils to engage
in any social activities on school
nights.
Provide a place for children to
study away from the family gathering
and where they will not be disturbed
by eompany.
See that they spend at least two
hours every night on their lessons.
There is a great need for the pendulum
to swing from indolence toward
study. 'We believe that the
best way to begin this movement is
to have some expression from the
parents. We should like some kind
parent who has the interest of the
school at heart to help stir up sentiment
toward this.

more than ten per cent, of a bank's
capital and surplus while one of its

Fifteen Years Given
To .Bank Robber
Florence, March 28.?<Carl Fowler
was sentenced to IB years' imprisonment
by Judge C. <2. Featherstone today
following a plea of guilty to
participation in the robbery, May 5,
1927, of the Bank of Coward, this
county. Solicitor L. M. Gasque announced
he would take the plea of
Thad (Smith later. Smith, according
to officers, confessed the robbery and
implicated Fowler.
A true bill was returned against
A. J. Fowler, Sr., and A. J. Fowler,
Jr., the latter a local attorney, on
a charge of receiving stolen goods by
the grand jury today. It was the
second time the jury had acted on the
indictment alleging that the Fowlers,
father and brother of Carl, had received
part of the $5,900 loot from the
bank robbery. The bill of indictment
was recommitted for reconsideration
today upon motion of D.
Gordon Baker, attorney, who bnsed
his motion on the ground that one
member of the grand jury which returned

stockholder in the robbed bank. L.
S.;i Singletary, the juror named, was
excluded from today's session when
the true bill was voted for the
second time.
Scout News.
The last meeting called to order
by scoutmaster. Dues were collected
with Scout oath and prayer. Discussion
of rally and distribution of
tickets to be sold by Scouts to community
dinner. About ten boys were
absent on account of camp at The
Rock in charge of senior patrol leader
Laughlin. Stout - Duncan Lang
resigned as Scout scribe. Bill Rhame
was elected in hie stead.
