In 18(51 the IVKalb Rifle Guards
'lun commamiui by Capt. T. L. Boykin
was the first company from this
county tn arrive in Virginia and
guarded the camps ^during the battle
of First Mar.nasses. After this battle
owing to some discord in the
ranks, it disbanded and all of the
members enlisted in other companies
from this locality.
I During the Civil War, Kershaw
County furnished about twelve hundred
soldiers to the Confederacy, exceeding
the male voting population
at that time. These were formed into
thirteen companies nine of which
wee infantry, three troops of cavalry
and one artillery. Six ( ontederate
Generals came from this community.
Cantey, Chestnut, Deas, Kennedy,
Kershaw and Villepigue, from
whom descended some of the best
soldiers who served gallantly in the
Great \V orld \\ am about which 1
will leave to some of my fellow
Lt gionnaires.
( hamher of Commerce Meets
The first regular monthly meeting
of the year of the board of directors
ot the ( amden chamber of commerce
was held last night at the Betty
Thomas Coffee Shop.
The meeting was featured by a
lively discussion of a bill now under
consideration by a committee of the
State legislature which bill will give
tin State Highway Department the
authority to relocate the state highways
of Kershaw County before hardsurfai.
;..g them. Much delay is'being
met with and more is anticipated
dut to thi lack of this authority.
The body went on record as favoring
the enactment of this bill in order
to expediate the construction of the
county's paved highways. A committee
was appointed to appear D fore
the legislative committee that is
considering the bill in Columbia today.
Hug hey Jennings, noted baseball
player, died at his home in Scranton,
1 a., at an earls hour Wednesday
morning.
