Meats and Butter Imported

disclosure of Clemson College's
economic survey of the Columbia
farm trade area is the vast
importation of vegetables, meats,
fruits and dairy products from other
sections because enough is not produced
nearby.
It is particularly. striking that
Columbians send afar for practically
every fresh vegetable they eat,, even
during the height of the gardening
season imjiorting things ^hat cotild
be grown locally under profitable
conditions. These vegetables come
from distant parts of South Carolina
and from other states.
In one year there were shipped
into Columbia from other areas
about 7,000 head of beeves, 25,000
head of hogs and 625,000 pounds of
butter.
Richland, Lexington, Saluda, Calhoun,
Fairfield and Kershaw counties
center their trading at the state
capitpl, logically. Within this area,
are soils and climate well adapted
to wide variety of farming enterprises.
While \he red soils are
generally adapted "? ! to^ cotton, the
heavy rainfall of the summer months
has made the boll weevil a hazard to
this enterprise. Sandier'fcOils along
the streams are best adapted to
'trucking. And indeed, the Columbia
area exports quantities of asparagus
annually. But it remains 'evident
that a great opportunity in
the fields of gardening, dairying,
livestock raising apd fruit growing
to supply the local market beckons
to farmers,bi these counties.

After the occupants of the hougafl
had escaped, some of them jumping I

Baptist hospital about 7 o'clock last II
night as a result of a fractured skull |
received at 1:30 yesterday afternoon ||
when he was struck by an automobile*. II
The accident occurred almost di-||
wctly in front of Mr. Dickey's hoihe, II
2226 Terrace Way. He had just dtsr II
mounted from a jitney, stopped on||
the opposite side of the stg*et frora||

street, when an automobile driven by 11
