TWO BANDITS SLAIN

bandits who fled after seeing two of
tholr companions slain in an attempt
to loot the suburban Mount Scott
ataUi bank here, wore at large today.
The marksmankhip of A. J. Demurest,
cashier, brought instant death
to two bandits?one with a bullet
through his neck and the other with
a 30-30 rifle slug through the head.
The dead are J. K. Benton and Fred
Williams. Four lookout men escaped
in two automobiles.
The attempted holdup occurred
shortly after the bank opened yes*
Ufrday and loss than one hour after
Deforest had taken the rifle from
his home and placed it in the bank
vault, to be used "in case we are
ever held up," he told his wife.
Three other peiuonk were in the
bank when the shooting took place.
They were Mrs. Demorest, the assistant
cashier; Matthew * Harris,
teller, and Harold Jones, bookkeeper.
When Benton produced a pistol
and ordered the bank employes
to the rear of the room, Demorest
who was concealed near the vault,
appeared with the rifle and fired
from the hip. Benton fell dead with
a bullet in his neck. Williams sent
shot at Demorest, but missed. When
the bandit attempted to fire again,
Im found his automatic had jammed.
While he sought to fyrce the cartridge
into the chamber, Demorest
