FIFTEEN ARE KILLED
I'ifty-Kight Siutain Injuries on The
Highway* During November
Columbia, Dec. 12.--Fifteen persons
were killed, eleven seriously
injured and forty-seven received injuries
of a minor nature in 122 accident*
on the highways of the State
during November, according to the
report of accidents for the past
month, issued recently by the State
Highway Department, from the office
of Hen M. Sawyer, chief commissioner.

were overturned, and three when
pedestrians \\ere struck by automobiles.
Causes for1 the accidents are given
by the highway department as
follows: Careless driving or speeding,
47; dazzling headlight*, 10; de-;
fects of car, 10; recklessness due to1
whiskey, 8; no lights, 1; defect* of
road, 1.
Six of the accidents took place at:
road crossings, according to the report.
Ten took place at bridges. Of
tbe total, 42 took place after dark,
80 in daytime, 67 on straight roads,
and 86 on curves; 16 on paved roads
and 107 on dirt roads. \
1 he silk in a bride's trousseau is
allowed to enter Finland duty free,
although the duties on imported silks
are high and form one of the chief
sources of revenue to the state.
A nine year old boy, William Ogles,
of (ilendale, got a cockle burr down
his windpipe and it took good work by
a surgeon at Spartanburg to get it*
out, and meanwhile the boy was
neatly smothered and suffered great
pain.

j Officers Asked To Watch Sale of
Dangerous Firework#

ards today wrote to a)) sheriffs in
South Carolina impressing them with
their responsibility in enforcing the
state lawn against the sale and distribution
of fire works. This action
is taken as a result of the death Fri-'
.lay of Harbara Gleaton, of Spring*!
field, from phosphorus poisoning from
swallowing a piece of a "son-of-a gun"
a popular form of fireworks, with a
phosphorus base. The Governor's
letter follows:
"Already there has been one death
of an innocent child in South Carolina,
the result of violation of the law
of the state with reference to the
handling and sale of fireworks. With
the approach of Christmas season,
when the various forma of fireworks
are being sold and discharged, I feel
that it is my duty particularly to
call to your attention to sections 21.3
and 214 of Volume 2 of the Criminal
Code of 1922, reading as follows.
"Sect. 231. 91. Sale of certain firecrackers
prohibited. It shall be unlawful
for any person, whether in his
owfl right, or as agent to sell, offer
for sale, barter, exchange or give
aw&y within the limits of this state
any firecricker, cannon cracker, bomb
or any other form of explosive,
cracker commonly called firecracker
or fireworks, by whatever name designated
or known, exceeding threeinches
in length and exceeding one
half inch in diameter, or any kind
of fire cracker, cannon cracker bomb
or explosive cracker by whatever
name called or known containing
dynamite or any substance that is
poisonous when taken internally by
children or other persons. Any one
violating the provisions of section
''shall, upon conviction, he punished by
a fine not exceeding $500 or imprisonment
not exceeding one year, or both,
at the discretion of the court.
"Sec. 214. 92. Sale of certain toy
Eistols prohibited?penalty. It shall
e unlawful for any per8<5WT*"firm or
corporation, in this state, to sell, keep
/Or sale, offer for sale, or give away
apy toy pistol in which caps, or
cartridges are used, 6r any caps , or
cartridges for such toy pistols.
Every person, firm or corporation
violatiing the provisions of this section
shall, upon conviction, be fined
not exceeding $190 or be imprisoned
(in case of an individual) for a term
not to exceed 30 days.
"I feel that it is only necessary to
call your attention to the foregoing
and I am confident that I shall have
your full co-operation./ in the enforcement
of this law*' for no other
! reason than that the children of the
state should be given ample protection."
The McNary-Haugen farm relief
bill has again been introduced and is
now on its way through congress.
The bill was vetoed by President
Coolidge at the last session, i

Boy Scout News.
The weekly meeting of Troop No.
Two was held on Fnday night at
7:30. Since the weather was cold,
each scout brought wood for the fire.
After the roll was called and dues
were-taken up we had reports from
the different pattols. Tne Beaver
Patrol had a very good program for
the evening. Most of the time was
taken up with instruction or knot
tying by Mr. Baruch. After the
meeting was over some of the scouts
remained at the Bcout house. We
had some very good stories by Jim
Loughlin and Allan Hardy. Last
week the Court of Honor met and
scout Jim Loughlin qualified for the
Eagle Scout Badge. He is the third
Eagle 6f our trQop and holds the^
record with 24 merit badges.

from the ring following a decision
