Former Camden Man Mixed Up #In
Conspiracy Tq Defraud
(From New* and Courier, October 13)
Bonds totaling $110,000 have been
fixed for the eleven defendants, indicted
Monday in the United States
Court for the Eastern district on
charges of conspiracy, to violate provisions
of the Federal land bank act.
The cases grew out of the failure
of tye Beaufort Bank and of the
South Uarolinn Agricultural Credit
i Company. W. E. Richardson, president
of the bank and chairman of
I the bojtrd of direotors of the Credit
company; R. C. H'ofne, Jr., president
of the credit company, and Miss
Beulah Harvey, secretary and treasurer
of the credit company, are nam A
"I each " of' the six indictments
upon which true bills were returned
Monday by the Federal grand jury.
Bond for Richardson and Home was
fixed at $4,000 fh each case instituted
against them. Miss Harvey's
bond was set at $3,000 for each
case. For the eight other defendants
bond of $4,000 for each case against
them was fixed.

gave a very attractive social on laat
Thursday evening at the home of
Misses Eunice and Eva Severance.
The living room had been arranged
to repreaent an old-fuahioned school
room with benches and blackboard j
and the teacher in old-fashioned I
costume. The pupils were given lea-1
sons in the three '"RV and at recess I
played games. To further carry out I
the "old day school" idea at the noon]
hour the pupils found their dinners, I
which consisted of assorted sandwiches
and candy, under the benches
in tin buckets and pasteboard boxes.

One of the five white convicts that
escaped from the Kershaw 'county
ihaingang' was captured as he was
crossing Big Lynches river bridge by
Rural Policeman S. P. Watkins and
Magistrate C. C. Pate of Bethune.
This man was on for ten years and
had served three years of the sen-,]

Mr. Cooley and the two followed
them to a point about aix miles below
Camden, where the men bad

wanted and they were brought back
to Camden along with the car they
were driving. The men had evidently
been "robbing other pieces for the

in the car and more overcoats
in a comparatively new trunk thjy
