Death of J. A. Williams
J amies A. Williams, who for the
past five years had Ixmn making his
home in Rock Hill, died at his hdme
in that city on Saturday last following
an illness of about a year,

out it before now, it would be mighty
fine if he would have a radiator cap
that can be screwed on without
screwing it nearly all day. (it takes
a good machinist to get one of them
caps on the old model started on
right.)
It would help to fix the oil gauge
so's a man can tell how much oil he
has or how little he has without getting
down flat of his neck and sliding
under the machine, twisting his fingers*
off. (If he saves his clothes J
at ail when undertaking this job?he
has to go home and undress and leave
them in the chiffer-robe, and pull
the stunt plumb buck),
j And then?if he will just make a
j car that wont shimmy or blackbottom,
I can put up with the dash light
| burning out every day or so. Hut

I Was Terribly Shocked
A few days ago I discovered that
the battery in my lizzie was growing
weak, and I happened to be passing
! a battery service station at the time
| where they examined batteries free of
. charge and filled them with water at.
i the same price, so I decided to give
j the boys a chance to work for me for
i nothing.
! The boss of the batterv business
i '
came over with a little instrument
with 2 ice picks fastened to .it and
began to poke around my "juice box"
and look at u little watch that was
hanging onto the ice picks and every
second or two he would shake his
head and frown: right then I knew
1 was ruint.
The man said: "Looky hear, boy:
it's a thousand wonders your battery
iiusn't set fire to your women folks
underclothes, it has u 'short' in it."
1 told him it could not possibly have
done that even if it had a "long" in
it too, as they did not wear any underclothes
that I knew of. (You see,
he discovered that folks who ride in
the hack seat of my Ford sit right
kerdab over the battery.)
I He said he charged batteries and
1 told him I'd take one then, and he
got it out and uncoupled my old one,
and installed the new one and I was
just about to drive off when he said
you owe me $1'J.65, and that he would
risk my check. I politely informed
him that he had just stated that he
: charged batteries, and that is the
reason I bought one as 1 did not
have the cash. Then he tried to

! he could pump new electricity into
an old battery, but he wouldk even
' then have to get cash in advance for
I charged batteries.
I saw right straight that we
couldn't trade, and he put my old
battery back in the car. He told
] me that it would do if I would buy a
new set of lead wires and get my
cells scraped and remove the lid and
1 throw it away and get 4 bolts for
' connections and remove the acidulated
vermin that had formed on the
minus and plus posts, all of which
| would cost me only $5.67, including
' the distilled water.

, 1 had a notion to turn the old boat
over to him and walk the balance of
I my life, but my wife suffers with
j fallen arches and ingrowing nails'
! and as she was along, I simply had
| to get one look from her before maki
ing up my mind, and I told the felI
low to go on and fix me up, and he j
; did. (That was 2, weeks ago, and
j he wrote me yesterday that the bank j
I on which I drew the check in pay-j
nient for his services refused to pay
my check. I don't understand that
bank. I have never dope anything
to hurt its feelings, and it does look
like they ought to accomodate a
j guy once in a while. The check was
I marked on the back, "no fun," and
