Commander Dav is, who was piloting
the machine, attempted to make
a landing when the craft refuse: to
ascend quickly and he succeeded m
bringing it to earth safely. but it
skidded over hard ground and into the
little mud hole called a dm k pond.

I he two forward engines went
down in the mud and the starboard
wing snapped off and fell into the

had his nets near the pond, preparing

I he machine dropped so close to
him that he was obliged to jump to
one side to escape being struck.
He waded into the pond in an effort
to save the lives of the flyers, but
they had been carried below the surface
of the water and he could not
find them.

gave the alarm. In a comparatively
short time several airplanes and the

from Langley Field, and the work ol
