Brown, a graduate of Aberdeen, uni- !
veraity, a scholar and a poet, and
former lieutenant colonel in the
British army, where he had a distinguished
record, committed suicide
by inhaling gas yesterday.
He was known as John Brown by
the firm that emploved him as !
night watchman. It'was not until i
today that his real identity was learn- *
ed by police. He was a brother-in- *
law of Lieut.-Gen. Sir Archibald Mur- 1
ray, chief of the imperial general ,
staff in 1015 and 1916. ,
Police were unable to discover a i
motive for the suicide. A maid found ]

gas tube lying on his face and the [
gas jet open. ,
Knife Wounds Fatal
Charles W. Smith, fpr many years j
prominent in the drayage business ,
here, and one of Sumter's best known 1
citizens, died at 9:45 o'clock Wednes- !
day night at the Tuomey Hospital 1
from the effects of knife wounds re- ,
ceived in a fight with Samuel Jen- ]
kins, negro, last Friday afternoon. i
Mr. Smith seemed on the road to f
recovery until Wednesday morning '
when he took a turn for the worse, j
One lung was pierced and death was (
due largely to this wound. <
The fight in which Mr. Smith re- (
ceived his injuries occurred last Fri- '
day afternoon on Dugan street, j
There is said to have been only one ]
eye witness to the encounter, a white 5
man who runs a bLacksmith shop '
near the scene of the .fight.
Jenkins received several knife i
wounds also, but his condition is not i
regarded as serious. IJc was taken 1
to Columbia last Friday night, but
later brought back heil and lodged
in the county jail. Wednesday after- .
noon when Mr. Smith's londition took
a turn for the worse* Jenkins was 1

to the City of Camden on April 1st,
1924, by abutting property owners on
assessments against abutting property

City of Camden on which permanent
improvements to the streets have been
made, and to meet part of the costs
of which such assessments have been
laid against the abutting property, is
hereby declared to have been the%hm

Sec. 4. In the event that in any'
year the collections on assessments
are- not sufficient to meet the payment
of the certificates then maturing
together with interest then due on
all oustanding certificates, a direct
tax shall at once be levied and collected
on all taxable property in the
City of Camden sufficient to raise
the amount of money necessary to
supply such deficiency; said tax to
be levied and collected in the same
manner as other City taxes. I
Sec. 5. The form of said certificates
of indebtedness and the interest
coupons attached, and the assignment
thereon and guarantee thereof shall
be substantially in the following
form, provided, if any change in the
detail of this form is desired by purchaser,
such change is authorized to
be made by the Mayor and City
Clerk, without further ordinance

than Twelve Thousand ($12,000.00)
Dollars; that said assessments constitute
a lien upon the property so assessed;
that by ordinance said assessments
are payable in fifteen equal
annual installments, the first installment
being payable on the 1st day of
April, 1924, and one installment each
year thereafter with interest on such
installment at the rate of six (<>) percent
per annum, until paid in full;
that the deferred installments of said
