head of a drayage company here, wan
tabbed through one lung in a fight
with Samuel Jenkins, negro, early this
afternoon. He is in a local hospital
and the outcome of his injuries i:- j
doubtful.
The negro suffered a number of
severe knife wounds but is not
thought to be seriously hurt. The
fight occurred in the business district
of the city and followed a row started
when Mr. Smith accused the negro of
altpost running him down with his
bicycle, both men used knives and
it was several minutes' before they
could be parted.
Jenkins was employed by J. J,.
Mimnaugh and company as a porter.
After his wounds had been dressed he
was placed in the local guard house,
but was later taken to the county
jail and from there carried to Columbia
for safe keeping by rural policemen.
Men buried in snow can hear every
word uttered by persons on the outside,
but their own loudest shouts are
inaudible.
Gold is contained in all sea water,
but in such small quantities that no
process has yet been devised for recovering
it profitably.
The New York Y. M. C. A. lias
given two thousand bachelors quartered
in its buildings a year in which
to find a wife and home. The last
census gave New York City 887,000
bachelors between the ages of 24
and 34.
