>l,s Mornsby Has Charge of National
Guard Ammunition
South Carolina is unique among alt
the states of the union in having a
woman as the "chief ordinance expert"
of the National Guard.
She is Mrs. Ida V. Hornsby of Columbia,
South Carolina, and this is
the fifteenth year that she has been
chosen as "armorer," in charge of
military supplies for .'15 units of citizen
troops, including coast artillery,
;nfantry and medical units. Shekeeps
house for machine guns and
bayonets, and loves her work. Her
story is told in the current issue of
The American Magazine.
Mrs. Hornsby's husband was the
state armorer until his health failed.
For three years before his death he
was unable to go up and down ^tairs.
Mrs. Hornsby began helping him with
the work, little by little, taking it up
when he was forced to lay it down,
until at last she wus doing it all?
packing the boxes with guns and
cartridges, and issuing ammunition
to the National Guard companies
stationed about the state.
"My husband got so at the last,"
said Mrs. Hornsby, "that he didn't
want me to be out of his sight; but
I nursed him and took care of the
armory, too. The companies didn't
know he wasn't doing the work, because
when the orders came in they
were filled just as they had always
been. Then, when he died, they told
me 1 could go on with the work alone.
I've been doing it ever since.
"At first, then men thought they
could impose on me," said Mrs.

say, 'just let me have that old gun;
it isn't any upe to you.' But they i

I said, and 1 showed the things that
; they belonged to. 'Those are hand
| grenade throwers,' he answered. 'No,
I said, 'those art machine gun carriers.'
So he got out his little book
and lead something; then he looked
at me and laughed, 'Have it your
way, Mrs. Hornsby,' he said. You're
right and I'm wrong.' So when the
guns were shipped the right carriers
went with them."
Mrs. Hornsby lives up-stairs over
the armory and there, in a couple of
rooms, she prepares her meals an(J
sleeps; but most of her time is spent
among the army supplies, for which
she seems to have developed something
of an affeetion. Her inventories
are kept with the system of a
woman who is proud of her housekeeping.
Mrs. Hornsbys job is a big one, and
she does it efficiently. She has been
commended by officials higher up,
and her opinion is respected by both
privates and officers.
Killed Playing Polo
Savannah, March 14.?Lieut. J. N.
Ryan of the officers' reserve corps
died in a hospital here today as a result
of brain injuries received yesterday
while playing polo at Daftrn
\Park Field. His horse cpllided with
that of another throwing the lieutenant
to the ground and rolling over
his head.

\\ hite Men Jailed at Lauren*
Laurens, March 11. Two young
white nifii, George and ( hades Benjam..],

charged with committing a highhanded
highway jobbery last night
in the Mountville section. The accused
men were arrested today and
both have admitted the charge, it is
officially stated. Sheriff Columbut
L. Owens investigated the alleged
holdup and robbery. He found that
,Cary Mitchell, merchant at Mountville,
on his way home, four miles
out last night was attacked by two
men whom he recognized as the Benjamjp
brothers and robbed of the
in his pockets and handbag, store accounts
and pistol from his car.
After leaving the main highway
Mitchell had a tire puncture and
while repairing it two men approached,
inquiring if assistance was needed.
Instantly Mitchell was covered
with a pistol and ordered to keep
quiet. He was searched and his
stranded car robbed after which the
men disappeared.
Investigation revealed that four
planks spiked with wire nails haci
been placed across the road and this
explained the puncturps. The aatch
el, books and pistol were found hid
den nearby. Late today warrant:
were sworn out against the Benjamtm
connecting them with two other rob
beries said to have been committee
earlier in the week in the town ol
Mountville where a store and garage
were broken into and robbed.
Bus Driver Fined
