Treacher Iltut Wrong View
Fditor The Chronicle:
Kev. Mellette, legislator from Oar-'
eiidon county, with an admixture of
politic* and religion ha* brought under
the limelight a full fledged aolon
from Clarendon county. It taxed our
credulity to believe that he cxpreaaed
himaelf m the mariner reported in the
state of the 10th instant, first because
he was sent to the legislature
from Clarendon county where intelligent
Christian men and women vote,
and second, because he claimed to be
a Christian.
We are surprised to learn thut the
people in Clarendon know nothing
about golf. Such a lack of knowledge
on their part has caused them
to forego the pleasure and profit to
be derived from this quiet, easy, inoffensive
and healthy exercise.
Perhaps if Mr. Mellette knew more
about it and foreign born people he
would not express hi/nself as he does.
Would the fact that other ministers
of the gospel disagreed with him have
any weight or would the sanction of
golf by the great Presbyterian church
of Scotland receive consideration at
bis hands? Would a perusal of what
Christ said in regard to Sunday clear
hlj> mental vision or is lie altogether
hopeless?
We wish to inform this solon that
all of the golfers arrested were residents
of Camden composed of the
flower of our community, except one
student of Yale, who is here on business;
that we have not discovered that
all the trouble in Camden was caused
by men foreign born who come here,
perhaps, to do their devilment. On
the contrary some of the best and
purest ^people from other states and
territories and from Camden have
been attracted to Camden.
Resplendent with the soul-stirring
j annals of a hallowed past; industrially
strong, served with power to
supply light and propel machinery by
never-failing waters, ceaselessly flowing
onward to the sea; under soft
Southern skies and swept by balmy
breezes wandering into lovely jiomes,
kissing perfumed flowers, and rippling
the waters of crystal-clear
lakes; crowned with a virtue and loveliness
among its children that not
only wooes the stranger, but unfolds
to him a glimpse of Paradise on earth.
Such is Camden.
The people who come here fill our
churches to overflowing on Sundays,
they patronize and subscribe to every
worthy cause; they build Christian
homes among us, kneel at the same
altar and pray to the same God.
Some of them have, upon their passing.
left handsome bequests for the
benefit of suffering humanity in the
hands of charitable institutions.
They have demonstrated to us that
goodness, purity and Christianity belongs
exclusively t^no clime, and
here they find a welcome and an environment
that suits them.
We suggest that even Mr. Mellette
would be treated nicely while here
and that perhaps he would be benefited
by breathing for a season the
air of Christian tolerance that pervades
this community.
