Columbia, March 2.?H. Thomas,
former secretary of the state highway
department, wan held in $1,000
bond Friday by a local magistrate to
aiihwer to charges of embezzlement
in connection with an alleged 5$IV,000
shortage, of Savannah Itiver Bridge
Commission funds, it was learned to
day.
Thomas was brought back to Soutn
Carolina from another state recently
on orders of Governor Richards, who
had made a cumpaign to have charges
preferred against the former highway
secretary. The alleged shortage
was reported more than a year ago
but it had been made good before being
discovered and no action was
taken against Thomas until Governor
Richards moved to carry out his
pledge.
Case of "Unwritten Law"
Sylvania, Ga., March 4.?Robert
Lovett, well known merchant and
self-confessed slayer of Paul Patrick,
young farmer, who wasv killed iri the
Lovett home, remained m jail today.
No charges had been preferred
against him.
Lovett is said to have returned
home last night and finding Patrick
in his wife's room shot him twice.
He later surrendered to the sheriff. '
Officials said today it was doubtful !
that I.ovett would be prosecuted.

The Midway School Improvement!
Association met March 4th. The pro- i
gram was given by the fourth and '
fifth grades under the direction of;
Miss Dinkins. The following program
was rendered:

Davis and Lewis Lee Anderson;
Recitation, March, Willie Hunnicutt;
Song, The Birds Return, fourth
and fifth grades. At the conclusion
of the program business was taken
up. The ladies decided to have a
Fiddlers Convention, March 18th, at
the school building for the benefit of
auditorium seats. After the business
the meeting adjourned to meet the
first Wednesday in April.

Bank Men Out on Bond
Louis McConnell and James Philen,
of Georgetown, who were brought
here Tuesday on warrants sworn out
by United States District Attorney
J. D. Ernest Meyer in connection with
the alleged shortage in the accounts
of the former Bank of Georgetown,
were released yesterday under bond.
The two men had been placed in
the Charleston county jail Tuesday
after waiving a preliminary hearing
before United States Commissioner
Arthur M. Huger, being unable at
that time to make atisfactory bonds,
which were set at $22,000 for McConnell
and $5,000 for Philen.
The men were brought here under i
a charge of violating the national |
banking laws, Bank of Georgetown
being a member of the Federal Reserve
system. The bank was closed
on January 21, following the discovery
of the alleged shortage, which is
said to he approximately $70,000.
The trial of the two defendartts, with
Miss Willie McConnell, who is also
named in the charge but whose release
was effected Tuesday, will come
up on March 21, at the term of court
scheduled for Columbia.?Saturday's
