Meantime the pupils of his eyes <
had dilated until they took on an un- ^
natural and wild appearance. He was '
sightless as the sphinx.
A physician was hurriedly sent for j
in the hope of administering a helpful <
antidote, hut by the timo the doctor
arrived the jaws of the- sufferer were '
so locked together, simulating the
form of lockjaw that it was impos- I
sible to pry them apart. <
Teacher Bound Over
Florence. Ala., Jan. 22.?Albeit
Woodard, Lawrenceburg, Term, school i
teacher, was hound over to the Lauderdale
county grand jury of March '

after a preliminary hearing today on
charges of murder in connection with i
the death of his wife September 18. 1

which he promptly met.
Mrs. Woodard, a bride <>f two)

which she and her husband were rid-J
ing plunged over a bridge into the
waters of Shoals creek near h/re j
Woodard contended that he lost con-j

swerved to avoid hitting a dog.
Witnesses at the preliminary hearing
testified that the automobile wa*
traveling at a low rate of speed when
the accident occurred, that a woman
was heard to scream shortly before
tho automobile plunged off the bridg.and
that no water bad been found in

Twenty-Seven Veterans Died
Columbia. Jan. 22. Twenty-seven
Confederate veterans died at the Confederate
home in Columbia last year,
according to the annual report of
Fit* Hugh McMaster, chairman of
Che board of commissioners, which

One wife and two widows died during
the same period.
At tin- beginning of the year 1926

were admitted, and four veterans

Two Held at Georgetown

Philan, assistant bookkeeper, arrested
today with L. T. McConncll, teller,
and Miss Willie A. McConnell in connection
with a $45,000 , shortage in j

The Hank of Georgetown was

Child Smothered To Death
BUckville, Jan. 20.?Little Charles
Miller, six-months old son of the Rev.
and Mrs. L, H. Miller, was found dead
in bed at 7:30 Friday morning. The
little fellow had got down under the
cover duriiig'tnu night and smothered
| to death.
Mr. and Mis. Miller have four children,
all of whom were born since Mr.
Miller's pastoral# began here. Charles
was the third child.
Mr. and Mrs. Miller leave soon for
Charlotte which will be headquarters
for Mr. Miller in evangelistic work
he i? entering with the 8outhern Baptist
convention, hut the little fellow
will be buried in the cemetery here.
Ollie Strickland, Georgia negro, has
been sentenced to solitary life imprisonment
in the Eastern Pennsylvania
state prison for the murder of
Miss Emily Collins of Media, on the
night of December H last. The negro
entered a plea of not guilty at the
beginning of the trial and then changed
his plea to one of guilty.

York Mail Dead
Vork, Jan. 8.?After more than 7
month*' confinement following a
stroke of paralysis, Samuel Melton
Grist, 65, York insurance man, died
at his home today,
Mr. Grist for 27 years had been
special agent for the Mutual Benefit
Life Insurance Company.
He is survived by two daughter!*,
Mrs. H. J I. Crosiand and Mrs. C. K,
Weatherly, of Bennettsville, and one
son, S. Karle Grist, of York. A
brother, Albert M. Grist, and a sister,
Mrs. Jessie Grist Stagg, of Gaffney,
also survive.
Funeral services were held at the
First Baptist church of York Wednesday.
Five prisons of Belgium have recently
been closed because of the decline
of crime in that country. * The
total of five prisons had only eight
prisoners, which have been transferred
elsewhere. To have kept the
five prisons open would have cost
$80,000 yearly.
