Columbia Man Killed in Wreck.
Columbia Sept. 11.?Thos. H. Bowera,
62, resident of a Columbia suburb,
was instantly killed today -when
his one-horse wagon and an ice truck
had a head-on collision. The negro
negro truck driver fled after the accident
and ha^a not been captured.

raconteur. The "doc's" specialty was
the 'sneeze ahd pick up", coming up
with three of a kind, which ho had
been holding out, just when they were
most wanted, ^n attack of hay fever,
which tfye "Doc" seemed to be able to
summon at will, would necessitate a
quick dive for his hqpderchief. As
compensation for this affliction, he
was rewarded by holding an extremely
ijjfrong hand just after the ensuing
sneeze.
Crawford took a trip to Australia
with the Anson - Spalding baseball
team and by way of securing expenses,
while passing through Honolulu,
trimmed the then Hawaiian King
Kamchameha to a fare you well, 'The
king was a confirmed poller fiend.and
a sure take for* every passing artist
with the "paste boards" who could put
up "tHe front" necessary to obtain the
entree to the Royal Palace.
Just as Crawford was a past master
in the art of "holding out*' so was
another American player who gave
the English "bookies" who wepe memhers
the Albert club, at one time
the second largest betting club in
London, several lessons in the finer
arts of poker playing. He was also
known as "Doc," '
The "Doc" had a method of "holding
^out" that was ^peculiarly unique
in our experience. He wore a carefully
trimfned spade beard and a collar
somewhat higher than is usual at the
.back. If some modern Delilah had
shorn the 'Doc" of .his hirsute appendage
it would have brought about as
equally disastrous results as those obtained
by the Philistine heroine when
ahe barbered Sampson. For under the
"Doc's" beard was a neat little place
of concealment for three cards. Hence
by thoughtfully stroking it, he
brought them down when he deemed
the moment propitious. The collar at
the back of the neck covered the flesh
colored band necessary to keep up the
clip which held the cards in position

Fires Bqllet Through His Heart.
Florence, Sept. 8.?Claude DoylB,
about 32, son of Mr. and Mrs.* J. " K.
Doyle, committed suicide in Darlington
this afternoon by shooting himself
through -the heart with a " pistoT of
heavy calibre. He had been in ill
health for several years. The shdotng
took place near the Baptist church.
.Doyle waft a veteran of ^fte World
war. ' He is survived by his parents,
three brothers,and four sisters.

I^GUILTY OP MANSLAUGHTER.
Donald Thompson Convicted By DiUon
County Jury;
Dillon, Sept. H.?Following practically
a i wo <lay battle of legal talent,
Donald Thompson, eighteen year old
white boy, indicted for the murder of
George Bryant twenty-seven year old
white man, hear Dillon last June, was
found guilty la&t night of manslaughter
and recommended to the mercy of
the court. Judge John S, Wilson sentenced
Thompson to s4rve not less
than four and not more than eight
years.
According to the testimony taken at
the hearing Thompson became displeased
with the attentions paid his
Wife by Bryant. On the night of June
26, 1926, Bryant took Mrs. Donald
Thompson and her parents and a cou*
pie of young women to the theatre in
Dillon. When the party returned to
the heme pf J. G. Norton, father of
lire. Thompson, Thompson was seen
standing by a tree several hundred
yards away, with a gun in his hands.
When Bryant came out of the house
4R. gunshot was heard and Bryant was
found dying from gunshot wounds.
Bryant died before making any statement.
Thompson was arrested at tho
home of his patents by Sheriff C. S.
Be Hum and Deputy Lonnie Stanton,
and he made no resistance.
. Two Officers Suspended.
Columbia, Sept. 11.?H. S. Scarborough,
of PinopoUs, and G. C. Ham,
of Florence, state constables hrrested
|n the recent "Hell Hole" prohibition
raids, have been suspended by Govnor
Thomas G. McLeod pending further
investigations of the charges*
Against them, it was announced yestdrdAy
at the governor's office.
"The suspension order in the two
cases, the governor explained, is issued
without prejudice' and Is subject
to. any further order that the chief
executive may issue in the cases, may
be revoked should the two men be ac^
quitted upon trial or made permanent
should they be convicted.
In the case of Sheriff .Henry S.
| Gamble of Williamsburg county, also
amohg those arrested in the raids, no
action has been taken pending receipt
of the testimony in the preliminary
hearing and such further investigation
as may be necessary.
