a paid spy against that of the mer
chant often, and tho merchant gets

law on the statute books that is doing
more to create dissatisfaction and to
breed dishonesty than the same lux

Koy Hill, 20, son of a Gaffney min
ister, and Charlie Kondrick, 22, left
Gaffney at noon today in the custody,
of Sheriff It V. Michaux, Jr., of
Burl.e county, North Carolina, where
the young men will face charges of
haying a hot to death last Saturday
morning at SJ:80 o'clock Frank But
ler, 30 year* of age, alleged block'
ader of Burke county.
Cherokee county officers are to
night searching for Otis Jolly, young
Gaffney man, who is said to have
been the fourth member of a party
going from Gaffney to the slain
man's home in North Carolina, and
it is expected he will be apprehended
in the near future and taken to Mor
ganton. .
An alleged confession, made by
Koy Hill to the Cherokee county of
ficers and to the North Carolina
sheriff is to the effeet that the four
men went to Burke county to get a
car load of liquor from Butler. They
obtained nine gallons and drove to
Butler's home, where a dispute was
raised about tho amount of payment,
the Gaffney youths offering $0 per
gallon and Butler demanding $7. It
is said in tho confession that Butler
turned off the motor of the Gaffney
car, and Hill alleges that Kondrick
fired through tho top of the automo
bile while young> Green shot directly
at Butler.
Although fatally wounded, Butler
is said to have walked a distance of
20 yards carrying a five gallon jug
of whiskey, entered his home and
told his wife, "Those fools have shoi
me," after which he fell to the floor
ami died.
Seen in the jail here this morn
ing, Green, who is known to his
friends as "Crip," emphatically de
nied that he shot Butler. Kendrick
refused to discuss the case, but
"Shadow" Hill, when approached by
his father and implored to tell the

The wife of the v. a i n man is said
to have seen two of the mt*n who

the homicide and Sheriff Michaux
said before leaving Gaffney today
that he planned tu take his youth*

that Mrs. Butler could identify the
two she saw last Saturday morning.

William Jennings Bryan was in the
President's chair. Upon Mr. Bryan's
death, however, he consented to have
