uHual Towards ChH?tea?e??H
Beaufort, Dec. 18. ? A spirit of com
munity cooperation whs shown hero
today when a group of Beaufort. busi
ness' men offered Ijl a*>uilu* the lia
bilities of tht fi*m of N. Chii^nscn
& Sons, owned and operated by Niels
Christen-scn and K. H. Christejr?a?.ft?
recently adjudicated an involuntary
bankrupt. The offer comprising ap
proximately $J>o,(H)0 in cash and se
. unties will be transmitted t ?
roditot > "f the firm.
The offer, coming as a surprise,
was made this morning, W. I). Con
nor of Brunson, referee in bankruptcy,
holding a creditors' hearing here in
the case. It was made by a group of
fitiiens headed by Major Edwin
Deuby, former Secretary of the Navy;
James R. Bellamy, former state repre
sentative and an extensive truck
grower; II. II. Lake, real estate deal
er, and practically every mercantile
film in the city was represented on
the committee.
The men Stated that certain citl-l
zens of Beaufort had held a some
what impromptu meeting and had de
rided to make the creditors of N.
Christensen & Sons a 100 per cent
offer, 10 per cent in cash immediately,
the remaining amounts to be liqui
dated at six months' periods in 20
per cent payments secured by notes.
The attorneys of the creditors unan
imously agreed to recommend an ac
reptance of the offer to their clients.
Before the hearing was concluded this
evening a motion was adopted to the
affect that N- Christensen & Sons be
allowed to resume their business un
der the supervision of the trustee,
J. A. Mace, of Hampton.^--^
The proposal of the 'committee of
Beaufort business men will be sub
mitted in written form as is requirad
by law in the next few days, and it
will be either accepted or rejected by
the creditors at a subsequent meet
ing. Those conversant with the af
fairs of N. Christensen & Sons, which
was founded by the father of the
present partners, the late Capt. N.
Christensen, shortly after the Con
federate war, making it one of the
oldest firms on the South Cnrolina
roast, stated that the bankruptcy was
forced1 evidently through a misappre
hension, and that the firm's assets
exceeded its liabilities several hun
dred times. Members of the citizens
committee stated that the firm has
enjoyed unexcelled credit and any re
verse suffered was due to several poor
crop years except during the past
season.
