South Carolina Loaea One of Ha Beat
Judxen in Death of Memmiager
Charleston, Nov. \1.~ Robert With
ers Mum monger, judge of the Ninth
judicial circuit for South Carolina, i
died at his home, $S Churc.h street, !
shortly before noon Tuesday, suc
cumbing to a heart attack which cam?
on several day* ago. The new* of hi*
death was a shock to relative* and
friend* in the city and will bo beard
with grief by citizens in other parts
of the state who learned to admire
and love him during the score of year*
that he .served among then as a pub
He officer. Out of feepect to the
memory of Judge Memaiinger, the
buftinoss of the court of geheral ses
sions holding the November term at
the Charleston county court bouse,
was suspended by Judge J. W. Dt
Vo re, presiding, immediately upoo re.
cejtyt of the sad nfws.
At the time of hit death Judge
Memroinger wan in the 69th year of
fya age, having been biorn July
16^7, the eon of the Rev. Robert W.
Merrtmingvr and Susan Mazyek hit ta
mingcr. He fetefrcd his early srhoo!
iftgf In Charleston and later attended
tfce University of Virginia. He woa
admitted to the South Carolina bar
in December, 1888, and after prac

be wat. elected judge of the newly
creatcd Ninth circuit February 14,
190&.
In point of length of service Judgu
Memmlnger was tho dean of the
South Carolina circuit bench when
death called him, as he had almost
rounded out his 21st year of uninter
rupted service. He possessed an
astute ? legal mind and power- of dis
crimination that were highly regard
ed by all lawyers practicing in his
court. He also had a reputation for
fearlessness and alertness that made
niin respected beyond the ordinary b>
those who came ii> contact with him.
Personally he was quiet almost to
the point of being .shy, hut intimates
never lacked in hirn a friend ready
?and willing to be called on in time
of needed assistance or advice.
When he was called to the bench
Judge Memminger had already had
'en years of service as judicial mag
istrate for the city of Charleston, an
office that eorres ponded in those days~
Momewhat to that of judg?- of the
county civil and criminal court. The
years as magistrate, were rich in ex
perienct? and judicial matters came up
for decision had, many of them, direct
t>earing on important decisions made
later during the long judgeship. As
a lawyer .Judtfe Memminger practiced
as senior partner of the firm of Mem
minger & Kcddinx. and a substantial
prnctice was built up, particularly in
the admiralty business, a branch of
legal study in which .Judge Memmin
