Mr, Hi-i.-dmno's editorials! are pub
lished aj i-\|irc.s.siontt of opinions
of the world's highest-salaried
editor and The Chronicle does -not
necessarily endorse all of his
views and conclusions.
In ( hicago, where this is written,
John (!. Shedd yesterday signed his
name to an agreement under which
he will supply $'2,000,000 to build. Ub-j
world's |ai gcst ' aquarium, in (irant
Park.
? Thus, all 'over the United States,
men that have worked hard all their
lives, and built up fortunes with the
help of the people, give back the
money to the people among whom
they earned it,'
Mr. Shedd's gift of a great aquar
ium is money well spent. It will in
crease the supply of public informa
tion.
If to the, exhibition of strange
creatures of the oceans and lakes the
John (i. Shedd gift could include some
plan for economical distribution
among the people of the food that
tonics from the ocean, that would add
to the value Of the gift.
A plan to get rid of sharks that
destroy billions of valuable fish every
year, and the small, savage whales
that 'prey upon the great schools of
salmofl in the Northwest would- be
worth millions in increased food
value.
Farmers 'arc encouraged by news
that makers of artificial silk will re
quire great quantities .of medium
grade wool, to mix with wood fibre.
The trade in artificial silk is des
tined to be enormous. If the farmer
raising and shearing sheep can com
pete with Asiatics, raising silk worm',
he may enjoy a new' kind of pros
perity. '

i Providence, taking care of the birds

Why should this nation, depending
for its safety in war, upon flying
machine- and flying men, put the
nation's f.ving department under the
control of human rabbits from the
navy or turtles from the army?
Not far from the train on which
;his is written in Arkansas City, Kan.,
there lives a dog. name unknown, and
all the rest of his life that dog will
believe in miracles.
His owner probably dead by this
time, was Warren Hardy, man of
quick temper. Seizing his shotgun by
the end of the barrel, Hardy hit the
dog with the butt. Neither he nor the
dog knew tlu gun was loaded. Hardy
i< in the hospital, and probably won't
recover.
All in one second tin- dog felt the
; blow; heard the explosion, raw his
crutl master stretched <>n the ground.
Knowing nothing about gunpowder,
; that dog will always believe in mir
acles. and also in a special providence
that avenges dogs, when they are hit
?with the butt end of a gun.
It is foolish, however, to .-av the
1 o > .?? you understand the more readily
you believe in miracles.
The radio is a genuine miracie of

The Kiting Sun of Prosperity
The awakening spirit throughout
the South for. the fullest utilization
of the opportunities of this, section it
coming with a ?ush that might seem
to bo almost miraculous. I<ong dor
mant Communities are bestirring
themselves and shaking off their
lethargy, determined to make the
most of the situation. C?rf?at centers
of industrial activity in the past, like
Richmond- Charlotte, > (Jreenville,
Spartanburg, Chattanooga, firming
ham and many other towns and cities
are fikewise arousing themselves to
now activity, business men and com
mercial organizations in the$e cities
are taking a deeper interest than over
before in constructive, uplnwUling
wprji. The mnvrfpapor* are full /of
the spirit of enterprise, In many
ei't i eft banks and business men are ad
y^'tising freely in the local papers,
acquainting these coinmunitios with
their opportunities and stimulating
local pride and enthusiasm.
This condition is ity'f confined to
any one state. It spreads from Vir*
ginia to .Texas, It is bringing forth
a deeper sense of tbe powe'v of well
organized and well-handled publicity.
Individuals, communities, states and
railroads are being stirred to the
value of publicity in creating pros
perity. Florida has been a magnifi1
cent example to every other Southern
state. Its publicity, cajrried on year
after year by railroads and commun
ities, is showing what can be accom
plished. The movement means far
more to the South than merely at
tracting nation-wide attention to the
resources of this section. It means a
quickening of the thought of tha
people of the South themselves; it
means that every college professor
will have a new message to tell to his
students, inspiring them as to the
South. It means that men who have
even uitprogressive in the past will
caich a new. vision of what can be
hone in their own community.
Mere and there uien will move from
> ne place to another, always thinking
that the place "just over the hill' is I
better than where they are, but on the
whole men will learn to see that there
an "acres of diamonds" all around
them, acres that can be tilled in many
ways to bring forth a harvest of
wealth .-in h as this section has never
known.
There will be a marked advance in J
real values in hundreds of Southern!
town>. and cities; farm lands will be J
more highly appreciated, and they,
w ill have an upward tendency. J
Out of this advance in land values
alone hundreds of millions of dollars"!
of real, tangible wealth will be made
by the South, and with ths increas
'ing wealth the people themselves will
be able largely to finance their in
dustries and enterprises and thus
share in the profit which will be
made.
The sun of prosperity is rising; its
first rays are touching the mountain
peaks of Southern opportunities
Higher and higher the sun will rise,
until the- whole land is flooded with
the midday glow and glory of abound
ing prosperity.
The average age of marriage in
India is twelve and one-half years.
