Much is being s?id about the* com
ing of I'miiLstriiiA to South Carolina
and the South, through the capital
of Northern and 'Eastern people.
There ii no doubt of thi* trend of
events. We need these, plants, but
it in evident that the community that
gets these capitalists will have to
"put up"/ Keen competition has de
veloped am on If the towns of this and
otheV states in the bidding for new
industries, insomuch that it ho* be
come nec<frsary for the town that
hopes to win to offer substantial in
ducements in cash and land.
In view of this situation it is evi
dent that the' lfctfrer cities have the
advantage of smaller ones. Hence,
the question arises, will it not be bet
ter tor a town like Camden t<> or
ganig? t? cuipo>'ation-?nd estabiUk-^a.
manufacturing enterprise on moder
ate scale, rather than undertake to
secure a larger concern by ptitting up
a big block of money to get it? Why
not build and own a plant ourselves,
rather than buy and not invn one?
There is nothing straiige'or unrea
sonable about this. It is simply good
common sense. It is what many
towns have done, and are doing. Com
mence on a small scale;; and then en
large from time to time, as. the plant
itself earns the money that provided
for the enlargement. Such a pro
ject can be organized and engineered
to a successful fruition by our own
home people, if onjy three or four of
our leading business men and capi
talists would show the slightest dis
position to lend a helping hand to
those of u$ who are trying to build
and boost Camden.
There is quite a good d.eal of idle
capital in- and 'around "Camden that
should be put to work in manufac
turing plants, located right here in
this good town, such as cotton fac
tories, knitting mills, chair, spoke
and handle factories, etc.
Camden has practically every ad
vantage that any other town fyas, and
more thaif many others have.
Why sjt still and wait till dooms
day? Why not get busy and double
the size of our town? We can. easily
do this by building a modern first
class hotel now, and then start some
thing in the manufacturing line, and
keep a- moving. Please somebody say
something.
