Law Violations on the increase rather than on the decline, Discontent and dissatisfaction on the part of almost all with present conditions, and had any one> layman or churchman, rum lusher or white ribboner, pro or anti, can place his two thumbs and tho tips' of his fingers together in an attitude of judgment and say that tho situation is satisfac tory is passing strange. How cfi n this intolerable condition j be obviated? How many these moth* Ill's in Israel keep their jug of wino without the opprobrium of being vio lators of the law of the land? How may the hates on both sides of the fence Ik* lessened? It can not be done by their side of the fence having t-lu<ir own way with out regard or consideration of the other side, v It both sides Would take, then both .sides must K?ve. Some charity must be exercised by all if tho temper of this people is to bo sweetened, if good will is to re, place- bitter hates. To this end let us cpmptflmiso. Let tho white ribboner allow to the rum t;UK/<lcr wines and beers, without re Kard to proofs and percentages; and let the rum guzzler forswear his double distilled, two hundred proof fire fuel. Knock the old stil out, Stop at fermentation. Cease distilla tion. Fermentation is nature's way of making liquor; distillation is man's way. Let's stop where nature stops and thereby drown all our misunder standings and hates in a condition of mutual ' sympathy and tolerance, While the state of South Carolina has no power now to change or re peal the law, no harm could come of an expression of public sentiment through the ballot. On the other hand much good would bo. accomplished were the result of a vote in tho pri maries to show that we had reached ?that point where both sides were ready to Kive and to take. To the primary with the question and let genuine charity write your vote. Lest 1 be misunderstood in making this bold proposition, let me say: I helped vote out the barroom and voted in the dispensary. I helped vote out tho dispensary and vote in the gallon-a-month. I helped "vote out the gallon-a month and vote in the quart-a-month. At which point I had no further op tion, for Uncle Sam assumed man agement. For a bt iter understanding; for a people charitable; for a true, perspec tive of our social balance sheets; for a satisfied and contented people ? for all these things you are and I am. Ho was about 05 years old and was born within tho present 'limit* of the corporation, but long tboforo there was any thought of a town. All of Catawba was at that time part of Lincoln county and Dolph was born on the farm of Reuben Setzer. About 10 years ago hp bccame na tionally known, from the fact that at that time his color, which had Ik < n coal black, began turning white in spots. These spots gradually grew until his whole body became ,)vhite. For the past quarter of a century, any stranger meeting him would have taken him for a white man. Ho was Newton's best informed citizen about early history of the tpwn. He saw the surveyors stake it off, mark the place for the first house built, and to his death could teil tho exact location of the first doz en residences and all the first stores erected in Newton. He could .give the names .of all of the first citizens, tell where they came from, and what their occupations, were, lie has been X?f much assistance to the Daughters of the Confederacy in gathering data about Catawba soldiers. He saw ev ery company (mm Catawba give their | last drill in Newton and take train j for the buttlefronts, and could tell I from what section of the country oacn company was enlisted, the names of the officers and many of the pri vates. j Dolph carried brick for tho build - j ing of the first courthouse, 75 years i Hgo, made mortar for the two addi- j tions to the old building, helped to I tear it down and carried the fir.->t ! brick for the new building, which was | i erected last year. KERSHAW MOTOR COMPANY Broed Street Camden, S. C. DeKalb Service Station DeKalb Street Camden, S. C. A M F. R1C ANK SHOULD PROD-OCE THB1R OWN UUBBKK . . TVo Boys Captured With Car Two young white boys, Ernest Avon, 15, of 717 South Eighth street, and Fred Hillburg, 15, of Gil South Fourth street, of Wilmington, North Carolina, arrived in Chester this morning around 12 o'clock. On the way from Rock Hill they picked up A. B. Gunnells, of Covington, (Ja., who was on his way to get work in Charleston, he says. When they rolled into the Pryor Service Station, in Chester, Gunnells advised Mr. W. T. Betts proprietor, that the boys had probably stolen the car. Mr* John Sanders, con stable, was called and arrested the two young men. The automobile is a Dodge touring car, with a South Carolina tag num ber C-1563; motor number A -247, 444. serial number 1706529. The right hub cap is missing, also the gas tank cap. The speedometer registers 507 miles. "We left Wilmington Tuesday, and walked a large part of the way to Lumberton. We got the car in Lum berton yesterday. went from there to Camden and back to Char lotte, and came on through Rock Hill to Chester," the boys said. Ernest Avon said he had worked some time ago in the City Meat Mar ket, at Wilmington. Hillburg said lie had spent a large part of his time on the golf links, caddying for the golfers there. Both claim they could find no work to do, so they started out to find some; Both boys looked tired and fore lorn, and claim they were very hun gry. They will be held in the Ches ter jail until authorities, which have been communicated with, arrive from Lumberton. ? Friday's Chester News. Small Pox at Lucknow Small pox in the Lucknow section of Lee county has reached the epi demic stage, according to statement# made by several Bishopville doctors yesterday. There were a few cases found two weeks ago and it seems that it has spread with fnuch rapidity in spite of the quarantine and every effort on the part of those in author^ ity to prevent its spread. It has been impossible to determine the number of cases at this time. It is said that there are quite u num ber of children affected, due, it is thought, to the fact that the law re quiring vaccination had been ignored. There is a great demand now for vaccination and doctors are being kept busy by those who fear the dis ease. It is hoped that with the pre cautionary measures now in force will soon see the epidemic under con trol. ? Bishopville Messenger. I*ay Penalty at Last Columbia, June 5. ?
