Delayed Diploma.

Smith, of this city, one of the best
known physicians of the South, who
was a member of the 1890 class at
Clemson ( 'ollege, will K ? vt- n h in
diploma at the coming commencement

I Dr. Smith was a member of the
senior class of il 896. One night,
while be wan cadet officer ot the
guard, the college eommissary was
i broken into and Mime groceries np
i propriated for a surreptious senior
banquet. Young Smith had nothing
to do with it, but the collet au
thorities, held that ho should have
prevented it, and they expelled him.
A little later, however, they realized
j that they had treated him badly and
; reinstated him and wrote him to
| come on back and resume his stud
ies. Young Smith sent, word that
the colU-ge might burn down and
the faculty with it, so far as he
eared, but that he would never set
foot on the campus again.
Soon after he began the study of
medicine. The years have passed
and he has become a leader in his
profession and one of the foremost
specialists in children's diseases in
the South. At . a recent meeting of
the. Clemson faculty onJ of his
friends among the professors, who
was at the college at the time he
' was expelled, told ol the incident
land suggested that he be given his
j diploma at the coming commence
ment. The motion carried f -unani
mously and has b,een< yntfiiimously
approved by the board nf trustee*.

Dr. Smith feels somewhat more kind
ly toward Clemson and he will be on |
hand at commencement and receive
, the diploma that ho worked for 20 j
I years ago. Many of his old class
mates, some of whom are successful
| men in various walks of life, have
heard that he is to "graduate" this
year and will be on hand ami thej
are looking forward to a happy re
union.
Dr. 'Smith has done such a won
dcrful work with his Baby hospital
at Saluda, and h i fame has extend
ed to so many other states, that any
college now would be glad to 'number
him among its alumni. "( lenison,
said a -college official who was in
Spartanburg yesterday, "will honor
herself as well av Dr. Smith in con
ferring the diploma at thi? late date."

Raleigh, May 5. -First blue sky
victim to go from riches to the
county home went today when S,
Mines Scarboro, Wake county farmer
was sent to the "poorhouse" for the
remainder of his few days.
The old man with goods estimated
from $70,000 to $ 100,000 was the
easy fruit of the stock salesmen.
They stuck him during the swell
time* of tins, H>1!> and early 1UZ0.
These fellows had wonderful sehemes
for him. At that time his wealth was
estimated at $100,000 and it probably
was with war inflation. The blue
stock fellows took his notes and ne
gotiated them at local banks. They
handled no much of this paper that
they broke many banks in the state.
They had a grand line of talk. They
would tell Mr, Scarboro that if he
went to Sid Jerman, fed Crow, Billy
Drake or Joe Brown, the, last one of
these unsportsmanlike rivals in busi
ness would tell him not to have any
thing to do with these stock salesmen
but if the old man desired really to
know how they stood where known,
go down to the Bank of Coats or some
othfjr depository ,and see how well
they thought of this business,
Old man Scarboro would do even -so,
The Raleigh bankers told, him that he
was tampering with bad stuff and
that they would carry none of it. He
went to the bank victims and ,saw
them full of this paper. The stock
salesmen were right. The safe bank
ers were all against their scheme, but
the smaller country banks took the
paper without hesitation. The old
man put out about $80,000 of his ami
the crash came. He lost everything
he had, homestead and all, and a few
days ago he made application for a
place in the county home. Yesterday
it was ordered by the county com
missioners and Mines Scarboro is to
day a pauper in the poorhouse. He is
8T> years old", a Confederate soldie",
and always a well liked man in Wake.
His is the most spectacular of the
cases produced by the blue sky artis',
but there are said to be many others
who were badly crippled by the in
I vestments in these worthless com
panies.
Boy Runs Over Sister

?the Rev. I). A. Brown and Mrs. Brown
of this city was seriously if not fa
tallv injured- this morning on the
campus of the public school. Her
brother had carried the children to
the school where he had put them

down town to return the car to his
father. Frances with two other girls
was in the center of the driveway.
Her brother sounded his horn. One
girl dashed one way while another one
went in the opposite direction, Fran
ces was addled. and instead or trying
to net out of the way stood perfectly
still. Her brother tried every pos
sible way to avoid the accident but
could not. Frances was immediately
rushed to the \\ adesboro, N. ( .. sana
torium, where she is in a serious
condition. It is thought that her sku.l
is crushed besides other injuries.

of Columbia, secretary of the state
highway commission. February was
the peak month, March dropped off
from April and April from March,

farmers on their farms and conse
quently less motor traveling on this
part. The January collections based
on the December sales were consid
erably less than the figures for the
other months, of course, for the de
partment received prior to .January
1. 1925, one cent from the gasoline
tax. whereas, it is receiving two.
